Despite Aches, Andreescu Keeps Winning
It was hard to judge Andreescu’s potential Miami form, given how little she had played since returning from a 15-month absence due to a host of factors – mostly a meniscus injury.
She played just two tournaments in Australia, losing in the second round of the Australian Open. And she hadn’t played since.
But despite her now eponymous niggles, the 20-year-old 2019 US Open champion has demonstrated that she hasn’t lost any of the fight.
A lower-back concern hampered her earlier in the tournament. And in a third-round win over No. 28 seed Amanda Anisimova, she came up with a groin strain.

She said later that she felt it on what likely will be the shot of the tournament – one reason she hit the miracle shot and just waited.
Whether the groin will remain an issue two days later is a wild card.
She gets another evening match; start time is 7 p.m.
Sorribes Tormo and the Canadians
If Sara Sorribes Tormo is having a breakout season, she has had to go through a lot of Canadians to do it in the last three weeks.
In fact, she has faced them in reverse ranking order.
The 25-year-old faced former Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard in the Guadalajara final and came away with her first career WTA title.
The next week in Monterrey, she lost a tight one to 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez in the semifinals.
And now, in Miami – in the biggest match of her career – she faces No. 1 Canadian Andreescu for the first time.
“I’m playing the best tennis of my life, this is for sure,” Sorribes Tormo said after her third top-30 victory of the tournament, over Ons Jabeur Monday night in the round of 16.

“I have seen her play. I know she gets to a lot of balls. She has a very heavy, spinny ball. She’s a crazy fighter. I want to go out there and fight even harder and hopefully, I can do good things,” Andreescu said

Unlike the first matchup, Osaka and Maria Sakkari actually have enough history against each other to draw a few conclusions as to the outcome of their match on Wednesday.

Osaka Remains a Heavy Favorite
Despite the fact that she has never had a straightforward match against the 25-year-old from Greece, there is so much confidence in Osaka’s ability to win these days that she remains a strong favorite.
Of course, the fact that she is undefeated in 2021 helps.

Sakkari on a Roll in Miami
Sakkari has plateaued a bit since reaching the top 20 back in February 2020.
It’s hard to know her ceiling; she usually beats the players she should beat and loses to those she “should” lose to.
But she has been impressive in Miami, notably in her 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (6) win over the rising Jessica Pegula in the round of 16.
