A Rematch from Group Play

Saturday’s gold medal game between the United States and Japan will mark the second time the two countries played each other so far in the Tokyo Olympics, with the first game coming in group play.

In the second game of group play on July 30th, the USA and Japan squared off as part of Group B, with the Americans coming away with an 86-69 victory. That outcome resulted in Japan losing for the first and only time to this point in Tokyo.

In that game, the USA was led by A’ja Wilson with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks, followed by Breanna Stewart with 15 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, Brittney Griner with 15 points and five rebounds and Diana Taurasi with 11 points and three assists.

For Japan, it was led in that game by Maki Takada, who tallied and three rebounds. Saki Hayashi had 12 points and four steals, Monica Okoye had 11 points and Rui Machida added nine points and 11 assists in the loss.

Team USA shot well from the field in that game and had lockdown defense on the other end of the floor, with the Americans shooting 54% from the field with nine threes, holding Japan to 35% shooting from the field.

USA Going For Historic Win

Along with a gold or silver medal on the line for the United States to finish up play in the Tokyo Olympics, the Americans are also aiming for a historic victory to go along with it.

If USA is able to top Japan on Saturday, it would mark the 55th win in a row in Olympic games, also marking the seventh straight Olympic gold medal and ninth overall in Olympic play.

The only other country to come close to the gold medal count of USA is the Soviet Union, which logged back-to-back gold medals in 1976 and 1980.

For Japan, it will claim the first women’s basketball medal in the country’s history regardless if it’s gold or silver. The best finish Japan has to date in Olympic competition was in 1976, when it finished fifth. In their most recent appearance in the Olympics in 2016, the Japanese finished eighth in that competition.

Best Bet

If you’re betting on who is going to come out on top in the game, it would be an absolute shocker if the United States would get upset by Japan.

The spread of 18.5 points could be a little bit on the low side given how the USA has played as of late, but if it ends up playing out like the last matchup between the two countries on July 30th, it could also end up being a bit closer than the 18.5-point spread.

When it comes to the best bet in this game, the over/under line could be a bet worthy of placing. The overall point total 159.5 is one that you should look to bet the over on, as it’s likely the two teams will combine to pass that by the end of the game Saturday.

The Pick: Over 159.5 (-113)
