It’s crunch time in the PWHL. Each team has just six or seven games remaining in the 30-game regular season. On Wednesday, the Montreal Victoire (12-4-2-5, 46 PTS, +26 GD) host the Vancouver Goldeneyes (7-1-4-11, 27 PTS, -11 GD) at Place Bell in Laval at 7:00 pm ET.

The Victoire are trying to reel in Boston (51 pts) for the #1 seed while the expansion Goldeneye need to bridge a six-point gap between themselves and Ottawa for the fourth and final playoff spot in the eight-team league.

The Victoire are nearly unbeatable at home (9-1-1-1, +21 GD) and Vancouver has been an unmitigated disaster on the road (3-0-1-8, -16 GD).

Captain Marie-Phillipe Poulin is in LTIR with a leg injury but the Victoire are a solid 3-0-1-0 without her (three wins, one OT loss) and have tightened up even more defensively without their main scoring threat.

In four games without Poulin, Montreal has allowed just three regulation-time goals. On March 25th, they posted a 3-0 road shutout of two-time defending PWHL champion Minnesota.

My second pick is for a scoreless first period at +170 odds, which looks like a wildly short price but, in context, is solid value.

At bottom, not only does this game feature league’s best defensive team minus its top offensive weapon against a squad that’s only managed 16 road goals all season; it is also apt to have the defensive intensity of a playoff game.

Vancouver’s playoff hopes are on life support, needing to make up six points on Ottawa and leapfrog Toronto (31 pts) in the process. Vancouver has averaged exactly 2.0 goals against per game in regulation over its last seven compared to just over 2.5 in its first 16 games of the season.

The first and only meeting between these teams ended in a 1-0 Montreal win (with Poulin playing), including a scoreless first, and three of Montreal’s last four games overall have ended 0-0 after 20 minutes. The same is true for three of Vancouver’s last six games.

With Marie Desbiens – reigning Goaltender of the Year – operating at the peak of her powers, and the Goldeneyes tightening up on the defensive end, I like the value on a 0-0 first period at +170 (37.04% implied probability).
