The stakes just got a little higher at the World Baseball Classic, as we move into the knockout stage and the objective is simple enough: you lose, you go home. The defending champions from Japan (4-0) will take on Venezuela (3-1) Saturday, with the winner taking on the survivor of Puerto Rico vs Italy.
Action gets underway Saturday at 9pm ET from loanDepot park in Miami. FOX will provide the broadcast coverage. Read below as I break down the Venezuela vs Japan matchup, and my best bet.
Venezuela vs Japan Prediction
- Under 7.5 runs (-105 at bet365)
SPORTSBOOK
It’s a dandy pitching matchup, with lefty Ranger Suarez squaring off against World Series hero Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Both have been solid in limited work, with Suarez set to make his second start at the WBC, after debuting against the Netherlands, pitching two innings, surrendering just one run on three hits.
Manager Omar Lopez is expecting the lefty to throw between 60-65 pitches, up to 80 if it calls for it.
He’ll need to be great, because Yamamoto is the definition of a big-game pitcher. He’s been solid in a small dose so far, pitching 2.3 innings of scoreless ball in his only appearance against Chinese Taipei.
Despite major star power in both lineups, neither Japan ranks only third in runs scored, while Venezuela is even further down the board in seventh.
Suarez will have to contend with a rested Shohei Ohtani, who sat out Japan’s last game against Czechia and still has some of the best numbers in the tournament, hitting .556 with a 2.025 OPS, belting two homers, with 6 RBI and four runs scored while drawing four walks.
Yamamoto will have to contend with the dynamite duo of Luis Arraez and Ronald Acuña Jr. Arraez has gone 7-for-14 at the dish with four doubles and two home runs, while Acuña Jr has scored a Classic-high eight runs for Venezuela.
But even then, I like the idea of the Suarez and Yammamoto setting the tone with stellar pitching to start, making this one a nail-biter as we get closer to the end, and someone needing to play hero to have his country advance.
Each team has only combined to go Under the 7.5 total set for Saturday once in four games, but as the stakes and competition levels up, so does the pitching, and I think we’re in for a tight finish at loanDepot park.
Venezuela vs Japan Picks
- Shohei Ohtani or Seiya Suzuki to Hit 1+ Home Runs
They’re tied for the team lead in home runs with two apiece and picking either of Shohei Ohtani or Seiya Suzuki to go deep is worthy of a wager.
Together, they’ve only had a grand total of eight at-bats against the projected Venezuelan starter, but they do each have at least a hit against him.
If Japan is to be successful, you have to figure one or both of these players will need to come through at some point on Saturdsay.
- Arraez 2+ hits (+125 at DraftKings)
Luis Arraez had a hit in every game at the WBC, including his memorable 4-for-5 performance against Korea in Game 2 of the WBC.
He’ll try to do something that he’s yet to accomplish in his young career: get a hit of Yammamoto, currently 0-for-6 across two games.
Fortunately, there are pitch counts for the starters (this is still, after all a tuneup to MLB’s regular season), so at most, Arraez would likely have to battle Yammamoto three times.
Once Venezuela finds its way past Yammamoto, Arraez should be back to mashing, and picking up this prop.
Venezuela vs Japan Odds
As of Friday evening at 7pm ET, Japan was a -180 favorite to advance over Venezuela, courtesy of DraftKings.
There’s good +126 value at FanDuel if you think the Japanese team can top Venezuela and by at least two runs.
The total is set at 7.5, with the Over getting -112 odds at FanDuel and -105 odds for the Under at bet365.
