Can Sky Stay Hot?

Chicago got off to a bit of a slow start in the playoffs, falling to New York in Game 1 of the opening round. The Sky answered strong over the final two games of the series, however, winning games two and three by an average of 28 points to take the series and advance.

Chicago is one of the favorites in the 2022 WNBA Championship odds, tied with Connecticut for second at +350. The Sky are attempting to become the first team to repeat as league champions since the Los Angeles Sparks did so in 2001 and 2002.

Riding a current hot streak, Chicago features a team that is very balanced and can hurt opposing teams from different areas on any given night. That balance and the chemistry the Sky posses make them a strong candidate to not only return to the WNBA Finals but potentially take home the league title once again this season. That journey begins Sunday against Connecticut, a team Chicago has handled with relative ease this summer while sweeping the four-game regular season series.

Sun Hope to Overcome Struggles Against Sky

Connecticut completed a back-and-forth series against Dallas in the opening round but pulled away with a dominant 15-point victory in Game 3 to take the series in a win-or-go-home game on the road. The Sun now turn their attention to the semifinals against a solid Sky squad, one which Connecticut has struggled facing so far this season with dropping all four meetings between the two teams.

The Sun, who are tied with the Sky for the second-best betting odds of the remaining playoff teams at +350, are a team that relies heavily on their defensive performance. Connecticut ranked second in the WNBA this season with a defensive rating of 96.3, but are facing a team in Chicago that tied for the second-best offensive rating in the league at 105.8.

The Sun are playing well and could put the regular-season struggles behind them in a new series in the playoffs, but Connecticut will have a tough task in trying to take three games over the defending champions on the other end of the court who are playing some impressive basketball of late.

What to Watch For

Connecticut and Chicago are meeting in the playoffs for a third straight year, with this semifinals series being a rematch of a 2021 semifinals meeting between the two teams which saw the Sky come out on top in four games. This season, the battle between the Sun and Sky could be another entertaining one in the best-of-five series.

A few things to watch for are how each team looks in the early games of the series, as well as which team will outshine the other offensively. In the opening round, Chicago got off to a bit of a slow start but finished strong, which could open the door for Connecticut to take at least a game on the road. The Sky have also shown the ability to finish a series off strong, which has been a bit of an issue for the Sun in completing the task at hand after a nice start in a series.

As far as offensive performance goes, both Connecticut and Chicago feature talented offenses, but the Sky owned the season series shooting the ball and notably shooting the ball from deep. If the Sun can limit the Sky’s three-ball, this series could be very even and would allow Connecticut to try and utilize its talented post group in the paint.

Sun vs Sky Picks

Sunday’s Game 1 will be a telling one for how this series goes, notably if Connecticut can jump out to an early lead on the road of if Chicago continues its hot streak and dominance over the Sun to take a commanding lead in the series. The Sky are a tough team to face at home, finishing the regular season with a WNBA-best 14-4 record in Chicago, while Connecticut was 12-6 on the road during the year.

With that said, Chicago should be able to continue to flex its muscles against Connecticut and continue to dominate the Sun to take a 1-0 lead following Sunday’s contest. The Sky are just too tough to face at home, setting the stage for Chicago to move two games closer to reaching the WNBA Finals.

For the best bet of the night, go with Chicago and the four-point spread listed entering Sunday. If the Sky do end up taking this game, they will likely be able to do that by more than four points at home.

  • The Pick: Sky -4 (-110)
