Sky, Mercury Tied Up At 1-1

After Chicago’s dominant performance Sunday to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the WNBA Finals, Phoenix bounced back with an overtime victory in Game 2.

The Sky have delivered a balanced attack on the offensive end while providing the Mercury with headaches all over the floor through the first two games.

Chicago has been led by Allie Quigley with 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, Kahleah Copper with 18 points, 9.5 rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals and Courtney Vandersloot with 16 points, 12.5 assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Behind that trio, Candace Parker has averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Phoenix’s Game 2 win helped by the Mercury’s supporting cast behind their star trio of Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith. That was a shift from Game 1, which is one of the reasons Phoenix dropped the opener.

Over the first two games, Griner has averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and two assists, Taurasi has tallied 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds and Diggins-Smith has added 14 points, eight assists, 5.5 rebounds and two steals per game.

Shey Peddy has averaged 9.5 points and four assists and Sophie Cunningham has pitched in with nine points and five rebounds to provide a nice spark for the Mercury.

Keys to Game 3

We’re getting a good understanding of this series chess match after two games.

In Game 3, there are a few keys for both sides that will be important in order to come out on top.

For Chicago, it will be about pushing the tempo and pace to wear the Mercury down,  much like they did in Game 1. Continuing to feature a balanced attack on offense will keep Phoenix off balance.

On the other sideline, Phoenix will be focused on limiting Griner, Taurasi and Diggins-Smith. The Mercury will also try to play at their pace, which will be another key. Chicago loves to push the ball and run the floor, and they’ve got the stars and role players in the rotation to bend teams to their will.

Either way, Game 3 should be a back-and-forth contest once again and one that comes down to the wire by the end of the matchup.

Prediction and Best Bet

It’s been a tale of two games to kick off this championship series, with the Sky dominating Game 1 and taking the Mercury out of it from the beginning, to Phoenix bouncing back strong and taking down Chicago in Game 2 to even the series.

Going into Game 3, Chicago should be able to use the fuel from the home crowd to take down Phoenix and grab a commanding 2-1 lead going into Game 4.

For the best bet of the night, go with Chicago covering the 3.5-point spread listed going into the game. If the Sky do indeed come out on top as predicted, they should be able to do it by more than 3.5 points.

  • The Pick: Chicago -3.5 (-104)
