After the first matchday in Group C, Netherlands vs Austria pits two teams who both sit at the very top of their pod, with the latter holding the slight advantage on goal difference. On Thursday, these two sides will clash in Amsterdam in what should be a thrilling fixture.

The Dutch won a 3-2 nailbiter against a vibrant Ukrainian team on Sunday in front of their supporters in the capital. The Austrians also collected the full points in a convincing 3-1 victory over debutants North Macedonia.

Holland and Austria have met three times since 2008, with the Netherlands winning every single game. However, they were all international friendlies.

Dutch Start On Right Foot

Frank de Boer’s side was seen as one of the contenders to make a deep run in Euro 2020 and they lived up to that billing in their first match. Well, at least in the final third.

After a rather one-sided first half for the hosts, they finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. PSV Eindhoven standout Denzel Dumfries whipped in a dangerous ball from the right flank which Ukrainian keeper Georgi Bushchan got a hand on. However, he steered the cross right to Georginio Wijnaldum, who calmly picked his spot from the top of the box to give the Dutch a lead. Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst then bagged a second just minutes later for his third competitive goal for the Netherlands.

However, this is where it briefly went downhill. Holland opted to leave centre-back Matthijs de Light on the bench due to a minor groin issue. His absence came back to haunt them after the Oranje conceded two goals in a span of just five minutes to Ukraine. In fairness, however, Andriy Yarmolenko’s first goal was an absolute stunner. The equalizer was a lack of man coverage though, with Roman Yaremchuk netting with his head on a set-piece.

Dumfries saved the Dutch late in the second half with a winner, but they need to be a lot more solid at the back if they’re going to be a serious contender in this competition. It’s expected that de Ligt will be selected on Thursday, which is a massive positive for the Netherlands. They absolutely need him in the starting XI, especially without Virgil van Dijk for the entirety of the tournament.

Austria Take Care of Business

The Austrians had absolutely no issues with North Macedonia, despite the fixture sitting at a 1-1 draw until late in the second half. Stefan Lainer’s timely run into the box resulted in a beautiful opener, but they conceded to the visitors just 10 minutes later when Genoa striker Goran Pandev capitalized on a clear-cut mistake from the Austria backline.

Gaffer Franco Foda made two very bright substitutions for his side in the second half that proved to be key. He brought on Marko Arnautovic and Michael Gregoritsch, who quickly made an impact in the final third. The attacking duo both netted within a span of 11 minutes to secure an opening victory for the Austrians.

While the opposition wasn’t the most difficult, it was a great start for Foda’s squad. Austria was dangerous up top and very stable defensively.  The Dutch are certainly a tough task, but even just a draw here could potentially see them through to the knockout stages for the first time ever.

The Dutch were able to score three goals and that barely involved one of the biggest pieces of their frontline, Memphis Depay. Playing in Amsterdam again is a clear advantage for the Oranje and although Austria showed well in their tournament debut, I don’t think they’re going to have enough here to defeat a much more accomplished country on this stage.

With de Ligt patrolling the defense, it’s going to be tough for the visitors to succeed at the same rate as Sunday. Take Holland to win a close one, with Depay finding the back of the net.
