The Dutch Poised For Glory

The last number of years have been a whirlwind for the Netherlands after missing out on the 2016 Euros and the 2018 World Cup, but they’re finally back on the big stage.

The Dutch are brimming with talent, but Frank de Boer’s side will be without captain Virgil van Dijk, who is still recovering from an ACL injury that kept him sidelined all season for Liverpool. Juventus standout Matthijs de Ligt will be looked upon to step up at the back and provide solidity for the Netherlands.

As for attacking talent, Lyon star Memphis Depay leads the line while Gini Wijnaldum is their anchor in the middle of the pitch. The former Liverpool man, who is on the cusp of signing with PSG for next term, led the Dutch with eighth goals in qualifying. Also keep an eye out for Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst and Sevilla’s Luuk de Jong who have been clinical for their respective clubs.

Holland head into the Euros in fine form, tasting defeat just once in the last eight games after a convincing 3-0 victory over Georgia on Sunday in their final tune-up fixture.

Austria Looking to Make Noise

This is only the second time ever the Austrians have qualified for the Euros after previously failing to proceed past the group stages in 2016. In ’08, they were co-hosts, therefore Austria clinched an automatic berth.

Led by Bayern Munich standout David Alaba, who is taking his talents to the Bernabeu next season, there hasn’t been much success for this side on the international stage. France Foda’s men have an impressive core of talent, though.

Stuttgart star Sasa Kalajdzic had an brilliant campaign in the Bundesliga, while former West Ham frontman Marko Arnautovic is always a threat in the final third. Leipzig mainstay Marcel Sabitzer will surely play a key part in the midfield as well, having impressed for both club and country over the last couple of years.

The Austrians played to a scoreless draw with Slovakia on Sunday and previously lost to England in a friendly. Heading into the tournament, they’ve went just 1-2-2 in their last five matches.

Young And Dangerous Ukraine Side

Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine have been a pleasant surprise. They were absolutely sensational in Euro 2020 qualifying, finishing atop Group B ahead of 2016 winners Portugal with a 6-2-0 record.

This will be the nation’s third tournament ever, qualifying as co-hosts in 2012 and booking their ticket in ’16 via playoff. However, Ukraine has never advanced to the knockout stages.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, who typically plays as defender for Man City, will anchor the midfield alongside Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi. In the final third, Roman Yaremchuk, who plies his trade with Belgian side Gent, will be relied upon to provide some brilliance. He led his country with four goals in qualifying.

The Ukrainians are unbeaten in five matches, however, four of these clashes have ended in 1-1 draws. They will play their final game ahead of Euros on Monday in a friendly against Cyprus.

North Macedonia Making History

It’s a massive feather in North Macedonia’s cap having even qualified for the European Championship. Igor Angelovski’s squad have never played in a major tournament. Frankly, just being here is considered a success for such a small Balkan country.

North Macedonia featured in the Euro 2020 playoffs, having beaten Kosovo in the semis and Georgia in the finals to officially make history. While there isn’t a lot of notable names within this team, Goran Pandev will definitely play a key part in their success.

The veteran Genoa striker has recently reached 100 Serie A goals and is North Macedonia’s all-time leading scorer. Napoli youngster Elif Elmas will be looking to wreak havoc in the middle of the park as well, profiling as the country’s most exciting young player.

While their chances of proceeding out of their pod are slim, they pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year by defeating Germany 2-1 in World Cup Qualifying back in March.

Predictions

When it comes to the winner of Group C, it’s hard to bet against the Netherlands. de Boer’s men have impressed over the last two years in both the Nations League and in qualifying, showing the type of quality we’ve seen in the past.

However, I believe that Ukraine is going to finish as runners-up here. While their recent run of form heading into the tournament hasn’t been great, they made a serious impression in Euro qualifying and even played to a 1-1 draw with France in March.

Austria will end up in third and just miss out on progressing to the knockout stages, while North Macedonia will finish in last.

Pick: Netherlands to Win Group (-205), Ukraine to Qualify (-240)
