Josh Allen Still Favored in NFL MVP Odds, but Mahomes, Hurts Closing Gap

- Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen remains the +225 favorite to win the 2022 NFL MVP Award
- However, both Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts are closing in at +250
- No other player is showing a betting line shorter than +1000 in the NFL MVP odds
For weeks now, the 2022 NFL MVP Award has looked to be Josh Allen’s to lose. Sunday, the Buffalo Bills quarterback was making a bold bid to lose it.
During a 20-17 Week 9 loss to the New York Jets, Allen was picked off twice. He failed to throw a single touchdown pass.
Meanwhile, QB Jalen Hurts was leading the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles to an impressive 29-17 victory over the Houston Texans on TNF. And Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were beating the Tennessee Titans 20-17 in a battle of favorites in the NFL divisional odds.
The end result of all this was that Allen’s betting line in the NFL MVP odds took a significant hit. So did his advantage over the nearest competitors for the honor.
Allen is still the clubhouse leader at odds of +225. However, both Hurts and Mahomes are suddenly hot on his heels. Each is offering a betting line of +250.

It’s Allen, Hurts and Mahomes in the top three of the NFL MVP odds in the table above after Week 9.

When the NFL MVP future book was first released in February at NFL betting sites, Mahomes and two-time reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers were the co-favorites. However, after his fourth straight loss on Sunday. Rodgers is now showing a line of +25000 in this betting market.
Allen Stumbles Badly
Not only did Allen cost himself a major chunk of his lead in the NFL MVP betting lines, but Buffalo’s loss is also leaving the Jets just a half-game behind the Bills for the AFC East lead. Every season it seems the Bills stub their collective toes on a game they should easily win, and this one looks to be the 2022 example of that.
Allen was leading the way in this debacle. He threw an interception to halt Buffalo’s first drive. However, appearances were that he’d overcome that miscue. At halftime, Buffalo was leading 14-10 and Allen had thrown for 143 yards.

The second half was disastrous. Allen was picked off again, leading to the TD that put the Jets ahead on the scoreboard. He was 5-for-12 for 42 yards over the game’s final two quarters.
He did save face with his feet, though. Allen ran nine times for 86 yards, a 9.6 yards per carry average, and two TDs.
Hurts Keeps On Rolling
As a team, the 8-0 Eagles are certainly the talk of the league. Being their QB definitely is putting Hurts into the MVP conversation.
However, his individual stats are not reflective of an NFL MVP campaign. Hurts is 10th in passing yardage (2,042). He’s tied for 11th in TD passes (12). On the other hand, he’s a solid sixth in completion percentage (68.2) and QBR (63.1) and second in passer rating (107.8). And he’s only been picked off twice.
Josh Allen cost his team this game.
Jalen Hurts must be the sole leader of the MVP race. It is no longer up for discussion or debate.

If Allen has any more stumbles and the Eagles continue to roll, it’s going to grow more difficult to ignore Hurts as a legit NFL MVP candidate.
Mahomes Remaining In NFL MVP Hunt
If there’s someone for Allen backers to be worrying about, it’s most certainly Mahomes. After all, the guy has a track record, and that always plays well with the NFL MVP voters.

Lately, Mahomes is also assembling the numbers to back up his MVP case. Mahomes leads the NFL in passing yards (2.605) and TD passes (21).
He’s second in QBR (75.4) and fourth in passer rating (103.6). In carrying the AFC West-leading Chiefs to an overtime victory over the AFC South-leading Titans in Week 9, Mahomes passed for 446 yards and ran for an additional 63 yards.
Allen Still Controls NFL MVP Chase
Buffalo continues to hold forth as the favorite in the Super Bowl odds. And even with his Sunday stumble, the MVP is Allen’s to lose.

However, he has opened the door to other possibilities. As recently as three weeks ago, Allen was the +125 chalk in this betting market. Hurts (+500) was a distant second.
Should Allen return to form next week and keep the Bills atop the AFC, all of this consternation will go away. But if his performance is not a one-off, then all bets are off.
