NFL team trends can be a lot of fun. They can also be a great help in making bets, especially when it comes to the Super Bowl—the less obscure ones, anyways. The 2026 Super Bowl sees the Seattle Seahawks vs New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday, February 8.

Let’s say you wanted to bet on the Seattle Seahawks to win Super Bowl 60 but aren’t sure if you want to bet them to cover the spread. STOP! A very strong Super Bowl ATS trend suggests the moneyline isn’t the play here.

Do not lock in any Super Bowl bets until you have seen these historical Super Bowl trends and fun facts. (Also strongly recommend you check in frequently with the Super Bowl odds before making bets as well …)

You will find a mix of straight up, against the spread, and over/under Super Bowl trends and fun facts throughout this list. If you’re not overly familiar with betting lingo, know that anytime you see “ATS,” it means against the spread.

1) The Team Who Wins the Super Bowl Almost Always Covers the Spread

The team that wins the game is 50-7-2 against the spread

Simply put, just the pick the winner of the Super Bowl. The team who wins the game is 50-7-2 against the spread in Super Bowl history.

Only seven teams have won the Super Bowl but failed to cover the spread:

  • Rams in Super Bowl 56 (-4.5)
  • Steelers in Super Bowls 43 & 10 (-7 in both)
  • Patriots in Super Bowls 38 & 39 (-7 in both)
  • Cowboys in Super Bowl 30 (- 13.5)
  • 49ers in Super Bowl 23 (-7)

The two pushes came in Super Bowl 34 (Rams over Titans) and Super Bowl 31 (Packers over Patriots).

Last year’s Super Bowl added to this trend, as the Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22 as underdogs.

So the general sentiment here is that if you like the favorite (Seahawks) to win, bet them against the spread (-4.5 currently). If you like the underdog (Patriots), don’t worry about taking the points; bet them on the moneyline (+194 at the time of writing this).

2) Super Bowl Underdogs Have Been Hot Against the Spread Lately

Underdogs are 18-6 ATS in the last 24 Super Bowls

Underdogs have been hot in the last 24 Super Bowls, going 18-6 against the spread in that time. If you had bet $100 on each underdog to cover the spread in the last 24 Super Bowls, you would have profited $1,036.38.

The six favorites to cover the spread in the last 23 Super Bowls include:

  1. Chiefs in Super Bowl 54
  2. Patriots in Super Bowl 53
  3. Patriots in Super Bowl 51
  4. Packers in Super Bowl 45
  5. Colts in Super Bowl 41
  6. Steelers in Super Bowl 40

The Eagles added to this trend last year when they covered as 1.5-point underdogs against the Chiefs.

3) Favorites Don’t Cover in Super Bowl Rematches

Favorites are 2-7 against the spread in rematches of past Super Bowls

The Seahawks are 4.5-point favorites in the 2026 Super Bowl when they take on the New England Patriots.

There have not been a ton of Super Bowl rematches in the past, but the previous matchups include:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys (1976, 1979, 1996) – Steelers covered as the favorites in 1979 but then covered as dogs in 1996
  • Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins (1973, 1983) – Washington won outright as underdogs in the rematch
  • San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals (1982, 1989) – Bengals covered as underdogs in the rematch
  • Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills (1993, 1994) – Cowboys covered as favorites in the rematch
  • Patriots and New York Giants (2008, 2012) – Giants won outright as underdogs in the rematch
  • Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots (2005, 2018) – Eagles won outright as dogs in the rematch
  • San Francisco 49ers vs Kansas City Chiefs (2020, 2024) – Chiefs won as slight dogs in the rematch
  • Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs (2023, 2025) – Eagles won outright as slight underdogs in the rematch

Favorites have only covered in two of the nine rematches and both of those games included the Cowboys. Super Bowl 60 will be a rematch of Super Bowl 49 and the Patriots are the underdogs.

4) Male-Led Halftime Show Means Underdogs Cover

Underdogs are 10-1 ATS in the last 11 Super Bowls with a male-led halftime show

I’m not sure what it is about male-led halftime shows that underdogs love, but they consistently cover the spread when a male takes the stage. Bad Bunny will be leading the Super Bowl 60 halftime show. Here are the last 11 shows with a male lead:

  • Super Bowl 59 (Kendrick Lamar) – Eagles won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 58 (Usher) – Chiefs won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 56 (Dr Dre, Snoop, Eminem) – Bengals lost the game but covered the spread
  • Super Bowl 55 (The Weeknd) – Bucs won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 53 (Maroon 5) – Patriots covered as favorites
  • Super Bowl 52 (Justin Timberlake) – Eagles won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 50 (Coldplay) – Broncos won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 48 (Bruno Mars) – Seahawks won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 44 (The Who) – Saints won outright as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 43 (Bruce Springsteen) – Cardinals lost but covered the spread as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 42 (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) – Giants won outright as underdogs

The only favorite to cover in the last 11 male-led performances was Super Bowl 53 (Patriots beating Rams 13-3, covering as 2.5-point favorites).

5) NFC West Teams Do Not Cover Super Bowl Spreads

NFC West teams are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Super Bowls

The NFC West has not had much success covering spreads in their last 10 Super Bowl appearances. The division has even seen each team get there at least once in that span … The Seahawks (1-2 ATS) and Cardinals (1-0 ATS) account for the division’s two ATS wins, while the 49ers have gone 0-3 and Rams 0-3 against the spread in that time

Some football fans will realize this trend had to stop before we got back to the 49ers’ dominance in the 80’s and early 90’s. But since then, NFC West teams have not fared well in the Super Bowl. The NFC West’s last 10 Super Bowl appearances include:

  1. Super Bowl 58 when the 49ers lost to the Chiefs
  2. Super Bowl 56 when the Rams beat the Bengals
  3. Super Bowl 54 when the 49ers lost to the Chiefs
  4. Super Bowl 53 when the Rams lost to the Patriots
  5. Super Bowl 49 when the Seahawks lost to the Patriots
  6. Super Bowl 48 when the Seahawks beat the Broncos
  7. Super Bowl 47 when the 49ers lost to the Ravens
  8. Super Bowl 43 when the Cardinals lost to the Steelers
  9. Super Bowl 40 when the Seahawks lost to the Steelers
  10. Super Bowl 36 when the Rams lost to the Patriots

The Seahawks, of course, reside in the NFC West.

6) Underdogs Like a Low Super Bowl Total

Underdogs are 8-0 ATS in the last 8 Super Bowls with an over/under less than 50

Here’s a look at the last eight Super Bowls with totals less than 50:

  1. Super Bowl 47, when the Ravens won outright as underdogs
  2. Super Bowl 48, when the Seahawks won outright as underdogs
  3. Super Bowl 49, when the Patriots won outright as underdogs
  4. Super Bowl 50, when the Broncos won outright as underdogs
  5. Super Bowl 52, when the Eagles won outright as underdogs
  6. Super Bowl 56, when the Bengals covered as underdogs
  7. Super Bowl 58, when the Chiefs won outright as underdogs.
  8. Super Bowl 59, when the Eagles won outright as underdogs

The total is once again less than 50 in Super Bowl 60.

7) Strong Rushing Performances Lead to ATS Victories

The team that rushes for more yards in the Super Bowl is 42-14-3 against the spread

This isn’t one that necessarily points to one side or the other prior to the game, since it is based off performance in the Super Bowl. Nevertheless, here it is: the team who rushes for more yards in the Super Bowl is 42-14-3 against the spread.

Last year, we saw the Eagles rush for 135 yards versus the Chiefs’ 49 yards on the ground, and Philadelphia covered the spread (won as the underdog). The 49ers in Super Bowl 54 are the only team in the last seven years to rush for more yards than their opponent and not cover the spread. They lost that Super Bowl to the Chiefs.

This trend is great news for the Patriots, who finished the regular season ranked 6th in rushing yards, while the Seahawks ranked 10th. New England has out-rushed each of their three playoff opponents by at least 57 yards. The Seahawks are just 1-1 in this category, as they failed to out-rush the Rams in the NFC Championship.

8) NFC Doesn’t Like Being the Favorite

NFC is 1-9-2 ATS in the last 12 Super Bowls where they are favored

This trend actually goes back further than you’d (likely) expect. The AFC has often served as the favorite in the Super Bowl since the turn of the century. Looking to the last 12 Super Bowls where the NFC was listed as the betting favorite, we land all the way back in 1996.

  1. Super Bowl 30, where the Cowboys failed to cover as 13.5-point favorites against the Steelers
  2. Super Bowl 31, where the Packers and Patriots spread pushed
  3. Super Bowl 32, where the Packers lost outright as 11-point favorites against the Broncos
  4. Super Bowl 34, where the Rams and Titans spread pushed
  5. Super Bowl 36, where the Rams lost outright to the Patriots as 14-point favorites
  6. Super Bowl 45, where the Packers DID cover as 3-point favorites against the Steelers
  7. Super Bowl 47, where the 49ers lost outright to the Ravens as 4.5-point favorites
  8. Super Bowl 49, where the Seahawks lost outright to the Patriots as 1-point favorites
  9. Super Bowl 50, where the Panthers lost outright to the Broncos as 4.5-point favorites
  10. Super Bowl 56, where the Rams did beat the Bengals but failed to cover as 4.5-point favorites
  11. Super Bowl 57, where the Eagles lost outright as 1.5-point favorites
  12. Super Bowl 58, where the 49ers lost outright as 1.5-point favorites

The Seahawks (NFC) are again serving as the favorite in the Super Bowl, which did not go well for them in Super Bowl 49, where they lost to the same Patriots team they’ll see this year.

9) Laying More than 3 Points is Tough for Favorites

Teams favored by more than 3 points are 3-13-2 ATS since Super Bowl 30

The three teams to cover as more than three-point favorites since Super Bowl 30 are the Broncos in Super Bowl 33 (-7.5), Steelers in Super Bowl 40 (-4), and Colts in Super Bowl 41 (-7).

This one does not bode well for the Seahawks, who are laying 4.5 points.

10) Male-Led Super Bowl Halftime Shows Call for Unders

The under is 11-4 in the last 15 Super Bowls with a male-led halftime show

Here’s a look at the last 15 Super Bowl halftime shows that were male-led:

  • Super Bowl 59 (Kendrick Lamar)
  • Super Bowl 58 (Usher)
  • Super Bowl 56 (Dr Dre, Snoop, Eminem)
  • Super Bowl 55 (The Weeknd)
  • Super Bowl 53 (Maroon 5)
  • Super Bowl 52 (Justin Timberlake)
  • Super Bowl 50 (Coldplay)
  • Super Bowl 48 (Bruno Mars)
  • Super Bowl 44 (The Who)
  • Super Bowl 43 (Bruce Springsteen)
  • Super Bowl 42 (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers)
  • Super Bowl 41 (Prince)
  • Super Bowl 40 (The Rolling Stones)
  • Super Bowl 39 (Paul McCartney)
  • Super Bowl 36 (U2)

Only four of those games saw their totals go over: 59 (Chiefs vs Eagles), 52 (Eagles vs Patriots), 48 (Seahawks vs Broncos), and 43 (Steelers vs Cardinals). Bad Bunny will perform at the Super Bowl 60 halftime show and the total is set at 45.5.

11) Dogs Love California Super Bowls

Underdogs are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 Super Bowls played in California

We have seen underdogs cover in five of the last six Super Bowls played in California. Those games include:

  1. Super Bowl 56 when the Bengals covered as 4.5-point dogs
  2. Super Bowl 50 when the Broncos upset the Panthers
  3. Super Bowl 37 when the Buccaneers upset the Raiders
  4. Super Bowl 32 when the Broncos upset the Packers
  5. Super Bowl 27 when the Cowboys covered as 6.5-point favorites
  6. Super Bowl 22 when Washington upset the Broncos

Super Bowl 60 will be played in California, with the Patriots listed as the underdogs.

12) Teams Wearing White Jerseys Have Edge in Super Bowl

Teams wearing white have won 16 of the last 21 Super Bowls

This is one of the strongest, yet most obscure, Super Bowl trends you will find! The team wearing their white jerseys has won 16 of the last 21 Super Bowls now.

The only three teams (two of them have accomplished this feat twice) to win a Super Bowl in the last 20 years without wearing their white jerseys were the:

  1. Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl 45
  2. Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowls 52 & 59
  3. Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowls 54 & 58

Last year’s designated home team, the Philadelphia Eagles, chose to wear their green jerseys, and they proved (yet again) they are above this trend.

This year, the Patriots had the decision and they have chosen to wear their white jerseys, getting on the right side of this trend.

13) Favorites Hold a Hefty Advantage in Super Bowl History

Favorites are 37-22 straight up in Super Bowl history

Favorites absolutely dominated the early Super Bowls, as only three underdogs won in the first 14 years. Entering Super Bowl 60, favorites are 37-22 in the championship game.

You can see who the favorite was each year with our past Super Bowl spreads. The Seahawks are listed as the favorites over the Patriots in Super Bowl 60.

14) Underdogs Have the Edge in Recent Super Bowls

Underdogs have won 10 of the last 14 Super Bowls

Underdogs have had a lot of success in the Super Bowl lately. Looking to the last 14 big games, underdogs have won 10 of them outright.

The Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs are the only teams who have won the Super Bowl as the favorite in the last 14 years —New England did it in Super Bowl 51 and 53.

The Seahawks are favored to win Super Bowl 60, making the Patriots the underdog.

15) Underdogs Like Super Bowls on NBC

Underdogs are 4-2 in the last 6 Super Bowls broadcast by NBC

Looking to the last six Super Bowls broadcast by NBC, underdogs have won four of them outright. The last one came in 2022, when Matthew Stafford’s Rams beat the Bengals as favorites in Super Bowl 56. They join the Steelers, who beat the Cardinals in Super Bowl 43, as the only favorites to win on NBC since 1998.

We have seen the Eagles upset the Patriots in Super Bowl 52, Patriots upset the Seahawks in Super Bowl 49, the Giants upset the Patriots in Super Bowl 46, and the Broncos upset the Packers in Super Bowl 32 all on NBC.

Super Bowl 60 will be broadcast on NBC.

16) Super Bowl Spreads Between 4 and 5 Are a Death Sentence for Favorites

Underdogs have won 4 of the last 5 Super Bowls with a point spread between 4 and 5

Super Bowl underdogs have thrived lately when the game’s point spread is listed between four and five points. There have only been eight Super Bowls that meet this criteria, but here’s a look at the last five:

  1. Super Bowl 56: the Rams beat the Bengals as 4.5-point favorites
  2. Super Bowl 52: the Eagles upset the Patriots as 4.5-point underdogs
  3. Super Bowl 50: the Broncos upset the Panthers as 4.5-point underdogs
  4. Super Bowl 47: the Ravens upset the 49ers as 4.5-point underdogs
  5. Super Bowl 44: the Saints upset the Colts as 5-point underdogs

As you see, underdogs have won four of the last five Super Bowls where the spread is listed between four and five.

If you look to all eight where the spread was between four and five, underdogs are 5-3. We also saw an underdog win Super Bowl 37, which was the Buccaneers upsetting the Raiders as 4-point underdogs. However, favorites won Super Bowl 40 and 11, which also had point spreads between four and five.

Seattle is laying 4.5 points in Super Bowl 60.

17) NFC Likes NBC Super Bowls

The NFC is 9-3 in the last 12 Super Bowls broadcast by NBC

This trend dates all the way back to Super Bowl 17 (1983), when Washington (NFC) beat Miami on NBC. Since then, only three AFC teams have won when the game is televised on NBC: (1) the Broncos in 1998, (2) Steelers in 2009, and (3) and Patriots in 2015.

Finally, a trend / fun fact that suggests the Seahawks could win the game!

18) NFC Doesn’t Like Being Favored

NFC is 1-5 in the last 6 Super Bowls where they've been favored

The last six times the NFC was favored to win the Super Bowl are as follows:

  1. Super Bowl 58 when the 49ers lost to the Chiefs as 1.5-point favorites
  2. Super Bowl 56 when the Rams beat the Bengals as 4.5-point favorites
  3. Super Bowl 50 when the Panthers lost to the Broncos as 4.5-point favorites
  4. Super Bowl 49 when the Seahawks lost to the Patriots as 1-point favorites
  5. Super Bowl 47 when the 49ers lost to the Ravens as 4.5-point favorites
  6. Super Bowl 57 when the Eagles lost to the Chiefs as 1.5-point favorites

Things have not gone well for them, as you can see. Seattle will look to change this trend in Super Bowl 60.

19) Underdogs Like a Male-Led Halftime Show

Underdogs are 7-2 in the last 9 Super Bowls with a male-led halftime show

The last nine Super Bowls to feature a male-led halftime show were:

  • Super Bowl 59 (Kendrick Lamar) – the Eagles beat the Chiefs as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 58 (Usher) – the Chiefs beat the 49ers as underdogs
  • Super Bowl 56 (Snoop, Dre, Eminem) – the Rams beat the Bengals as favorites
  • Super Bowl 55 (The Weeknd) – the Buccaneers upset the Chiefs
  • Super Bowl 53 (Maroon 5) – the Patriots beat the Rams as favorites
  • Super Bowl 52 (Justin Timberlake) – the Eagles upset the Patriots
  • Super Bowl 50 (Coldplay) – the Broncos upset the Panthers
  • Super Bowl 48 (Bruno Mars) – the Seahawks upset the Broncos
  • Super Bowl 44 (The Who) – the Saints upset the Colts

As you see, underdogs won seven of those nine games, with the Rams & Patriots serving as the only favorites to win. Super Bowl 60 sees Bad Bunny performing at halftime.

20) Underdogs Win Super Bowls in California

We have seen underdogs win four of the last six Super Bowls played in California. Those games include:

  • Super Bowl 56 when the Rams beat the Bengals
  • Super Bowl 50 when the Broncos upset the Panthers
  • Super Bowl 37 when the Buccaneers upset the Raiders
  • Super Bowl 32 when the Broncos upset the Packers
  • Super Bowl 27 when the Cowboys beat the Bills
  • Super Bowl 22 when Washington upset the Broncos

New England will be the underdog in Super Bowl 60, played in California.

21) Underdogs Thrive with Low Totals

Underdogs are 7-1 in the last 8 Super Bowls with an over/under less than 50

The last nine Super Bowls that meet this criteria are:

  • Super Bowl 59 where the Eagles upset the Chiefs when the over/under was 49.5
  • Super Bowl 58 where the Chiefs upset the 49ers when the over/under was 47.5
  • Super Bowl 56 where the favored Rams beat the Bengals when the over/under was set at 48.5
  • Super Bowl 52 where the Eagles upset the Patriots when the over/under was set at 49
  • Super Bowl 50 where the Broncos upset the Panthers when the over/under was set at 43
  • Super Bowl 49 where the Patriots upset the Seahawks when the over/under was set at 47.5
  • Super Bowl 48 where the Seahawks upset the Broncos when the over/under was set at 47.5
  • Super Bowl 47 where the Ravens upset the 49ers when the over/under was set at 48

The total in Super Bowl 60 is currently set at 45.5.

22) Points Are Scored in California Super Bowls

The over is 9-2 in the last 11 Super Bowls played in California

This fun fact dates all the way back to Super Bowl 11 (1977), when the Raiders and Vikings had a game total set at 38, but scored 48 to cash the over. The only one to go under was the most recent one—Super Bowl 50—when the Panthers and Broncos only scored 34 points. The total was 43 for that Super Bowl.

23) Totals Between 45-48 Are a Sweet Spot for Overs

The over is 6-1 in each of the last 7 Super Bowls with a total set between 45 and 48

Super Bowls 58, 49, 48, 47, 45, and 43 all had game totals set between 45 and 48 points, and six of them went OVER. The outlier was Super Bowl 58, where the over/under was 47.5 but the two teams only produced 47 points.

24) Underdogs Cover in NBC Super Bowls

Underdogs have covered in each of the last 7 Super Bowls broadcast by NBC

Underdogs have consistently covered spreads when the Super Bowl is broadcast by NBC. Here’s a look at the last seven:

  • Super Bowl 56 when the Bengals covered as 4.5-point underdogs against the Rams
  • Super Bowl 52 when the Eagles covered as 4.5-point underdogs against the Patriots
  • Super Bowl 49 when the Patriots covered as 1-point underdogs against the Seahawks
  • Super Bowl 46 when the Giants covered as 2.5-point underdogs against the Patriots
  • Super Bowl 43 when the Cardinals covered as 7-point underdogs against the Steelers
  • Super Bowl 32 when the Broncos covered as 11-point underdogs against the Packers
  • Super Bowl 30 when the Steelers covered as 13.5-point underdogs against the Cowboys

All but the Bengals, Cardinals, and Steelers won their games outright as well.
