It’s tough replacing a legend, but Jon Scheyer is off to a fine start in his first season in charge at Duke (4-1, 3-2 ATS) since replacing Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils only loss in five games so far this year came at the hands of the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks last week in Indianapolis.
They’ll have three games over four days in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament beginning on Thursday, November 24th against Oregon State (3-1, 1-2 ATS). Oddsmakers are thinking this should be a slam dunk for Scheyer’s squad, with Duke opening up as massive 21-point favorites in the college basketball odds.

There’s no love being given to Oregon State with the spread here even though you can technically pass this off as a “home game” since it’s in-state while Duke is playing across the country. The over/under is set at 140 points for two teams who have combined to go under the betting line in six of eight games this season.
Duke Blue Devils Betting Analysis
It’s a youthful Duke squad this season, but they are still ranked number eight in the nation right now. They might not be the favorites, but the Blue Devils are always one of those teams that hangs around the top squads in the odds to win March Madness and this year is no different.
Freshman forward , Kyle Filipowski, has led the Blue Devils in scoring for four consecutive games. The seven footer has also been dominant on the glass averaging over 10 boards while only seeing 25 minutes of action per game.
Five-straight games with 10+ points to start his Blue Devil career. Kyle Filipowski is tonight's @Carquest Player of the Game 😈

Duke has absolutely eaten the opposition alive on the offensive glass as a team this season. They have an 84-38 advantage in that area through five games, getting a bounty of opportunities for second chance points. According to the KenPom ratings, their offensive rebound percentage is 45.9 which ranks second in the entire country.
While owning the glass has got them a ton of extra offensive looks, it appears they’re unsure of who the go-to scorer will be for them in winning time. They haven’t had a single player score 20 in a game so far this year. It’s early, so not too worrisome at this point, but once that ACC schedule kicks in, they’ll be looking for someone that can step up in the clutch.
Oregon State Betting Outlook
Perhaps Oregon State will be insulted by the spread in the college basketball odds and be motivated to prove they are not last year’s Beavers. A season ago, Oregon State finished with a miserable record of 3-28, but they’ve already matched that win total this year.
The schedule has been kind to them, without a single road game as of yet. Although this is a “neutral site” game, playing in-state against a team that’s had to travel across the country can’t hurt. Regardless, this will be, by far, the Beavers stiffest test to date.
2022-23 KenPom College Basketball Rankings
Team | Rank | Record | Adjusted Offensive Efficiency | Adjusted Defensive Efficiency |
---|---|---|---|---|
Duke Blue Devils | 10th | 4-1 | 115.5 (7th) | 91.7 (26th) |
Oregon State Beavers | 242nd | 3-1 | 98.7 (231st) | 104.9 (246th) |
Glenn Taylor Jr. leads the way in scoring for Oregon State with 16.3 points per game. The sophomore forward and guard Jordan Pope account for over 30 ppg for the Beavers. They have had some struggles offensively beyond those two. The Beavers have scored more than 70 points just once against the three Division I schools they’ve faced.
Duke vs Oregon State Pick & Prediction
Let’s not mince words, 21 points is a big spread in the Duke vs Oregon State odds. However, the Blue Devils have four wins this season and those victories came by 27 points, 46, 34 and somehow they won by just 17 in their last games against Bellarmine. Some teams just have a knack for feasting on inferior opponents.
If you’re looking for a bit of a wacky stat, the Blue Devils are 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games. There’s always the threat of garbage time points closing the gap in a big mismatch, but although they appear much improved, Oregon State just isn’t in the same league as Duke. Pick the favorites and the points in this one.
