- It’s the battle of Virginia when the Cavaliers visit the Hokies on Saturday, February 4th
- Two weeks ago, Virginia drew first blood, defeating Virginia Tech 78-68 at home
- This time, with the Hokies at home, it’s a pick ’em in the Virginia vs Virginia Tech odds
Bragging rights in the Old Dominion are up for grabs on Saturday, February 4th when the Virginia Cavaliers (17-3, 8-11-1 ATS) head a couple hours southwest to tango with the Virginia Tech Hokies (13-9, 8-14 ATS) at the Cassell Coliseum.
Tipoff will go at noon ET in a rematch from a couple weeks ago, where the Cavaliers were triumphant, winning 78-68 at home. With little to choose from here, neither team is favored as it’s a straight pick ’em. Five of the last six Hokies games have gone over the total, including that last head-to-head between these two squads.
The Cavaliers ride a 7-game winning streak into this matchup. Below, you can find the Virginia vs Virginia Tech odds as we also offer up our best bet and prediction.

With both teams paying out at -110 on the moneyline, the implied win probability sits at 52.38% for both sides. The Hokies are a pitiful 0-7 on the road this year, but at home, they check in with a 10-2 record.

Cavaliers a Moneyline Cash Cow
At 17-3 on the season, the Cavaliers have been one of the best moneyline bets in college basketball this year. They own the best overall record in the ACC, but are second in the conference standings, behind Clemson.
Currently, their odds to win March Madness sit at +2000, with only seven teams considered stronger favorites. Virginia are the 6th ranked team in the nation, but the KenPom analytics don’t love them as much. According to KenPom, they are 13th overall in the country.

They’ve been steadily climbing the AP Poll, with seven straight victories. This is a methodical team on offense that slows the game to a crawl to make sure they get the perfect shot.
Only four teams out of 363 Division I programs have a slower adjusted tempo than the Cavaliers, but they own a 53.5% effective field goal percentage that is 41st in the country.
While they barely average 70 points per game, the Cavs ability to hit shots from beyond the arc has been vital to their success. Checking in at 38.5%, Virginia owns the 18th-best three point shooting percentage in the NCAA.
Virginia Tech Betting Outlook
Although the Cavaliers are the better team from long range, it’s the Hokies who have the best shooter from distance in this matchup. Senior Hunter Cattoor is 14th in the nation in shooting from beyond the arc, making an incredible 43.4% this season.

He may be the most lethal long-range bomber in the country, as this is the fourth consecutive year he’s made at least 40% of his triples.
Affairs between these two intrastate rivals are usually close contests. They have alternated winning and losing the last five times they’ve faced one another.

02/26/2020 | VT 53 – UVA 56 | UVA | Under |
Surprisingly, these teams topped the over/under total by 20 points a couple of weeks ago. Historically, affairs in the Virginia vs Virginia Tech odds have been extremely low scoring. Previous to this season, they went under the total in their last five meetings, combining to average a miniscule 110 points per game.
Virginia vs Virginia Tech Pick and Prediction
Both these teams are in the top 20% in adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom. While they don’t waste their shots, they don’t have a ton of offensive possessions either, using the entire shot clock to their advantage.
It appears as though their last game was an aberration compared to the standard contests featuring these two. In seven of the last nine matchups, they have finished with less than 132.5 points, which is the over/under in the college basketball odds for this affair.
With buckets in such a fierce rivalry game at a premium, our prediction is that these teams fall short of the projected total. As an added statistic to ponder, the under is 5-1 for both Virginia and Virginia Tech in their last six against a team with a straight up winning record.
