Chase Young’s Heisman Odds Improve from +2500 to +850 … During a Bye Week

The Chase Young hype train is rolling and the odds have started to show just how much momentum the Ohio State defensive end has built up.

All of the top contenders had byes last weekend, but there was still a major change to the 2019 Heisman Trophy odds. Young is now listed at +800 after being available at +2500 before Ohio State’s bye week.

The implied odds of Young winning the Heisman Trophy at that price are roughly 11.3% and while it may not be the lottery ticket it was a couple weeks ago there is still value in betting the Ohio State prodigy to make history and become the first defense-only player to win the award.

Young Has Been Most Dominant Player This Season

The stats don’t lie; Young has been an absolute monster coming off the edge for the Buckeyes this season. He ranks first in college football with 13.5 sacks and also has five forced fumbles. These numbers are even more impressive when you consider the fact he is double-teamed on many plays.

Diving deeper into the stats, you see just how dominant Young has been. Each edge rusher is graded on their performance every single game. Of the top-nine performances this year, five belong to Young including each of the top three. That’s unbelievable production considering Ohio State has only played eight games so far this season.

Will Teammate Justin Fields Take Votes Away From Young?

Of the four players above Young in the Heisman Trophy odds, you’ll see Buckeyes QB Justin Fields. I’d be more concerned about vote splitting if they played on the same side of the ball. With Fields starring on offense and Young on defense, I feel like voters will be able to differentiate much easier.

The Buckeyes defense ranks second in defensive efficiency and, while the team does have other stars like Jeffrey Okudah and Damon Arnette on defense, Young is clearly the dominant force.

Young Has Chance to Make History

The fact remains Young is trying to do something that has never been done – win the Heisman without playing any snaps on offense or special teams. There have been plenty of other great defensive players who received votes and even got invites to the award ceremony, but this year might be different.

Joe Burrow has a tough date with Alabama coming up and a poor performance could see his candidacy take a hit. Jalen Hurts already has a bad loss (at Kansas State) and Tua Tagovailoa has missed games due to injury. The path is clear for Young to steal the award should he continue putting up numbers for an undefeated playoff contender.

I’m in on the 6’5, 265-pound pass rusher having a real chance to win the award. My advice would be to bet on him before the upcoming LSU vs Alabama matchup eliminates one of the players listed ahead of him.
