The David Shaw Era at Stanford ended with a thud on Nov. 26. The Cardinals lost to BYU 35-26 to complete a second consecutive 3-9 season.
Shaw resigned moments after the game and the search continues for a replacement.
Stanford had a 14-28 record in Shaw’s last four seasons after going 82-26 in his first eight seasons. Shaw was promoted from offensive coordinator prior to the 2011 season to replace Jim Harbaugh, who left to become the San Francisco 49ers’ coach.

With +100 odds, Roman has an implied probability of 50% of being Stanford’s choice for its next football coach.
Roman Favored to be Next Stanford Coach
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman is the favorite at +100 and has Stanford ties. Roman was the Cardinal tight ends coach in 2009 and 2010 before going with Harbaugh to the 49ers.
Roman has been in the NFL ever since. He has spent the past six seasons with the Ravens and helped develop Lamar Jackson into a star quarterback.

Over the years, Roman has been in the running for head coaching jobs both in the NFL and the college level. So far, nobody has hired him.
However, he is the favorite to finally break through this time. Stanford has reportedly already reached out to Roman and the two sides have had encouraging conversations.
Petersen, Bloomgren Next on List
Former Boise State and Washington coach Chris Petersen is the oddsmakers’ second choice at +400. Rice coach Mike Bloomgren is given +600 odds.
Petersen is an interesting case. He has a 147-38 record in 14 seasons at the Division I level but left Washington following the 2019 season saying he was tired of coaching.
Despite sitting out three seasons, Petersen is a coveted commodity. The question is whether he would leave his analyst job at Fox to jump back into the fire.

Bloomgren has yet to have a winning season in five years at Rice and his overall record is just 16-38. The Owls were 5-7 this year.
Rice, like Stanford, has high academic standards so Bloomgren is used to recruiting in that environment. He was also a Cardinal assistant coach from 2011-17.
Stanford Next Coach Longshot Play
Dave Aranda seemingly has no desire to leave Baylor after just three seasons. Yet plenty of schools courted him during the last coaching cycle.
Aranda is a California native, and the lure of Stanford could be strong to someone considered one of the more cerebral coaches in the game. He is worth at least a small wager at +1800.
Who will be Next Stanford Coach?
Roman is favored for a reason. He’s a great fit for the job, a very accomplished assistant coach, and long overdue for the opportunity to run his own program.
With Roman having ties to the program, and Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir reportedly having already spoken with him, our pick for the next Stanford head coach is Greg Roman.
