Round 2 of the College Football Playoff is upon us, and it should be a doozy when the 5th-seeded Oregon Ducks (12-1) battle the 4th-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders (12-1) in the Orange Bowl.
Both schools are making their first Orange Bowl appearances ever, and a trip to the CFP Final Four is on the line, with the winner taking on the survivor of Indiana-Alabama.
Texas Tech is coming off a bye and hasn’t played a game since toppling BYU in the Big 12 title game on December 6 — part of the reason the books have faded the Red Raiders in the college football odds.
The Orange Bowl goes on New Year’s Day at 12 p.m. ET from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with ESPN carrying the broadcast.
See below for the Orange Bowl odds, preview and my latest Oregon vs Texas Tech prediction.
Oregon vs Texas Tech Prediction
My Oregon vs Texas Tech prediction is for the Ducks to win outright and advance to the semifinal.
The Red Raiders boast one of the most accomplished defenses standing in this tournament, a team that surrendered an average of 10.9 points per game on the season. Texas Tech is at least on the level of the elite defenses Oregon has faced this year, and quite possibly a cut above.
A good defense is about the only thing that’s come close to limiting the Ducks. They played three games where they scored 21 points or fewer: the first was a loss to Indiana (30-20), a team that allowed 10.8 points per game this year.
The second was a 21-7 win against Wisconsin, who ranked Top 5 in the Big Ten against the run and Top 10 in points allowed.
The last was an 18-16 win over Iowa, who ranked behind Indiana in points per game in the conference and Top 4 in passing yards allowed per game.
However, I think Oregon’s defense is overshadowed by the Red Raiders, and they can absolutely hang with Texas Tech’s No. 2 scoring offense (42.5 points per game).
It will have been 26 days since we last saw the Red Raiders take apart BYU 34-7, and while the defense should be up to speed right from the jump, the offense will likely need at least a series to get back to full force.
As I mentioned in my early Oregon vs Texas Tech preview, the Ducks have had an infinitely more challenging schedule, with games against current CFP top seed Indiana and then Top-5 Penn State.
They also had to adjust styles to slug it out with Iowa and then battle USC in a shootout. They also have a playoff game under their belt, so they’re locked and ready.
Texas Tech’s ranked opponents are Utah and BYU twice. Oregon will be, by far, the most accomplished team they’ve seen all year.

Oregon vs Texas Tech Matchup Preview
Oregon didn’t need to shake off any cobwebs, as they went to work in Round 1, dismantling the James Madison Dukes on December 20.
The Ducks wasted no time getting their high-octane offense in gear, scoring touchdowns on each of their first five possessions to make this one a laugher by halftime.
There’s little chance it’s going to come anywhere close to that easy when they collide with Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders have stars across their front seven and should make Ducks’ QB Dante Moore — potentially a No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft — a lot less comfortable in the pocket.
They’re led by unanimous All-American linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who was so good this season he finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. His stats were unreal: seven forced fumbles and 117 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and four interceptions.
Edge rusher David Bailey was also a unanimous All-American selection, finishing second in FBS with 13.5 sacks, while cornerback Brice Pollock had a team-high five picks, part of a defense that led the nation with 31 takeaways.
That defense worked hand-in-hand with their own high-powered offense, as the Red Raiders ranked inside the Big 12’s Top 3 in both passing (289.4 yards per game) and rushing (190.9 yards).
Moore will give pro scouts a chance to see how he works under duress and under the big-game spotlight. He’s thrown for 3,046 yards and 28 TDs against just eight interceptions, pacing the Ducks to 38.2 points per game this year, a Top 10 scoring mark in college football.
Texas Tech pivot Behren Morton is less heralded, but the Red Raiders have yet to lose a game this year when he’s started. A lower-leg injury kept him out in a 26-22 loss to Arizona State. With the senior in the game, Tech has won every game by at least 20 points.
During Oregon’s current 7-game win streak, the Ducks have held five of their opponents to 16 points or less.
Oregon vs Texas Tech Odds – Orange Bowl
Since opening as 1.5-point favorites, the Ducks have gotten a little more separation, now set as 2.5-point favorites at DraftKings, while also coming in as -130 favorites on the moneyline to advance to the semifinals in the CFP Bracket.
You can find the Red Raiders with +115 odds to win outright at bet365, while they are getting -105 odds as 2.5-point underdogs at BetMGM.
The total moved down a point from its original 52.5-point line, perhaps taking into account the strong defense featured on both sides. You can find that number at various sites, like bet365 and BetMGM.
