  • Jennifer Lopez dazzled audiences in her newest film role, Hustlers
  • Many are calling Lopez’s appearance her best role to date
  • With a Golden Globe nomination secured, is Lopez on track for an Oscar nomination as well?

Don’t be fooled by the rocks that she’s got. She may be Jenny from the Block, but despite an impressive film resume to her credit, Jennifer Lopez still doesn’t have an Oscar in her awards cabinet.

Not since playing the title character in Selena has Lopez been so critically applauded. Following that performance, she’s tended to stick to fluffy rom-coms and the like. But Hustlers gave her a chance to show depth on screen.

When you consider the type of roles Lopez typically goes for, it’s not really a surprise. But this year’s appearance in the film Hustlers is one fans and critics alike are calling her best outing yet. So, is J-Lo on track for an Academy Award nomination?

Odds Jennifer Lopez Will Receive Oscar Nomination For Role in Hustlers

Globe-Worthy

Just recently, Lopez was included in the Golden Globes nominees for her role as Ramona Vega in the crime drama Hustlers. Up for Best Supporting Actress, Lopez must conquer fellow A-listers including Margot Robbie (Bombshell), Laura Dern (Marriage Story), Annette Bening (The Report), and Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell).

Lopez hasn’t been up for a Globe in 22 years, since her appearance in Selena. But she’s back and hotter than ever. Critics and fans alike have lost their respective minds over Lopez’s performance. She showed a major range, killing it in the dance scenes, and managed to make the audience love her character despite her inherent flaws.

It makes total sense that Lopez got a Globe nomination, but the Academy Awards are a bit tougher to nail. Looking ahead to this year’s Oscar nominees though, Lopez is looking like a good bet.

Many are assuming Dern, Robbie, and Lopez herself will make the list. Additionally, performances by Florence Pugh (Little Women) and Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit) may make the cut.

One in a Million

Jennifer may not seem like the most likely Oscar contender, but consider this: all it takes is one killer performance to woo the Academy.

Similar to Lopez, actress Sandra Bullock sticks to fluffier popcorn-type films. But that didn’t stop the Academy for nominating – and awarding – Bullock when it came to her serious role in The Blind Side.

Though she’d never been nominated before, Bullock won the award and during her acceptance speech asked, “Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?”

If it happened to Bullock, it can certainly happen to Jennifer Lopez. Her performance transcended entertainment and impressed even her biggest haters. You can’t deny the power of an amazing performance. The fact that it came from Lopez, perhaps an unlikely choice for the role, just makes it more impactful.

Lopez deserves this nomination, and she’s going to see it happen.
