  • Season 4 of Fox’s reality competition The Masked Singer premieres September 23, 2020
  • The identity-revealing singing series promises to “increase the bonkers level and keep the production values up” this year
  • We take a look at this season’s odds and popular speculations for who is underneath the crazy costumes

Just when you thought the costumers and casting agents behind The Masked Singer couldn’t outdo themselves, the series is upping its game once again.

Already in its fourth season, Fox’s hidden-identity singing competition has been a consistent hit. Judging from what we know about the next batch of performers, this year is going to be just as fun as past years.

In fact, according to Executive Producer Craig Plastis, this year will include “various quarantining and various camera tricks” including a COVID-19-friendly virtual audience who can vote from home as well as a new venue in Red Studios Hollywood. Plastis says this season will “increase the bonkers level and keep the production values up”.

Here is how the odds to win look heading into Episode 1.

Odds as of September 23.

A pre-season special aired on September 13 in which the cast of characters–and some helpful hints– were revealed. During the special, Sun stood out as a front runner and also announced this clue: “If you’re trying to figure out who I am, here’s a hint: This sun knows how to shine like a torch, even during the freezing winter.”

Popular guesses as to Sun’s identity are LeAnn Rimes, Lea Michele, and Idina Menzel. Visual icons of hot air balloons appeared in Sun’s promo reel.

In an on-the-nose obvious guess, Menzel would make sense as the voice of Elsa from Frozen and an originating role in Broadway’s Wicked. Suddenly the hot air balloons and winter references make sense.

Rimes’ public romantic issues would make her a good guess, as well.

This has been a tough year for Michele, with former Glee co-stars accusing her of bullying. Michele is also a famous Barbra Streisand fan both on and off screen, and the inclusion of Streisand’s song “Rain On My Parade” are a good hint, too.

With guesses such as those, all signs point to Sun being a powerhouse vocalist. No matter who rises out of that suit, they know how to sing. Those pipes may take them to the finish line.

The Power of Two

This is also the first year that a duo will appear on The Masked Singer, in the form of Snow Owls. The pair of fuzzy birdies are sitting with pretty good odds at the moment.

So who is this dynamic duo? Popular guesses online speculate the likes of R&B duo Chloe x Halle, ice-dance brother-sister ShibSibs, and dancing siblings Derek and Julianne Hough.

One half of the Snow Owls has fanned out eyelashes, leading fans to believe that one Snow Owl is a male and the other is female. (Apparently males don’t have eyelashes? Who knew?) Another popular guess that would fit with this theory is that the Snow Owls are secretly Donny and Marie Osmond.

Interestingly, Donny already appeared on The Masked Singer in Season 1. His character, The Peacock, was actually the runner-up on the season. Since he narrowly missed out on the first-place trophy, is he back with his sister to reign triumphant?

On the preseason reel, the Snow Owls stated, “You can try and figure out who we are but as for who is more talented, it’s a tie.” Regardless of who they are, it’s doubtful they can triumph over the incredible vocal of the Sun.

Pick:  Sun (+500)
