Breaking Down C9 vs. TL

What better way to finish off the LCS Summer Split than a best of five series between the top two teams, Team Liquid and Cloud9. Team Liquid enter as slight favorites which is no surprise considering they’ve won three straight LCS championships heading into Detroit.

In the semifinals, Liquid was pushed to their limit as Clutch Gaming shockingly took them all the way to game 5. This was supposed to be a dominant series from TL but Clutch caught them by surprise with their aggression and unique play style.

Entering game 5, Team Liquid was under all sorts of pressure. Losing to Clutch would have been the greatest upset in LCS history. Clutch gaming finished last during the spring split and got off to a slow start in summer.

However, Team Liquid has been in pressure packed situations before and held off Clutch with a dominant Sona-Taric game.

There might be concern after seeing Team Liquid struggle against the fifth place team in summer. But a lot of credit should go to Clutch for their massive improvement. They’ll be one of the favorites to win the gauntlet and qualify for Worlds as North America’s third seed.

Team Liquid’s opponent in Cloud9 should be an even tougher match-up. For the most part, Cloud9 was in control over CLG in their semifinal match but there should be questions raised for their inability to close out game three.

Still, Svenskeren and Nisqy were very impressive in dominating the mid-jungle match-up and Licorice got several solo kills over Ruin. Cloud9 is even more calculated and aggressive in their early game attacks than Clutch Gaming. C9 is a team that almost always has something up their sleeves. They’re not afraid to play their style and pull out weird and unexpected picks.

Cloud9 Looks To Soar

It looks like Team Liquid ran through most of their strategies in their series against Clutch. Of course, they will have another week to brainstorm and get ready for the strategies and game plan that C9 has.

Cloud9 has been a tough match-up for Team Liquid all split long. C9 won both matches during the regular season and they were both very one-sided affairs. The more aggressive and unpredictable C9 gave the calm and calculated TL a lot of trouble. With Cloud9 coming in as underdogs, betting on them here provides a lot of value. Team Liquid is favored because of their strong regular season record and their dominance in North America over the past two years.

However, Cloud9 is hungry to get back on top. They haven’t won an LCS title in five years but now could very well be their time. It won’t be easy, but I’d bet on Cloud9 to take down Team Liquid in five games.

Pick: Cloud9 (+215), O 3.5 (-240)
