The most powerful man in soccer, Sepp Blatter, stepped down as FIFA president on Tuesday, one week after seven other FIFA officials were arrested on corruption charges and just four days after Blatter was re-elected for a fifth consecutive term (defeating Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein).

An investigation by The New York Times claimed that FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke was involved in a $10m payment over South Africa’s bid to host the 2010 World Cup, and rumor has it that Blatter is also under investigation by the FBI for corruption.

While the resignation of one man won’t fix all that ails soccer’s governing body, it does bode well for transparency going forward. It also removes a significant distraction from the soccer world prior to the 2015 Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to start this weekend in Canada and which Blatter had – just short days ago – been intent on attending.

Since Blatter is being investigated by the FBI – an American organization – it should be a little less surprising that he chose to resign prior to the Women’s World Cup; attending the tournament would bring him perilously close to the long arm of the Feds.

As we head into one of the most significant weekends in soccer history, let’s take a look at all the odds related to the FIFA scandal and the World Cup, which Team USA enters as favorites despite playing in a “group of death” in the opening round.
