- The Portugal Masters tees off Thursday, October 24th
- Some solid names make for a decent field at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course
- The golfers with the best value to emerge victorious
The European Tour heads to Portugal where Tom Lewis defends his title at the Portugal Masters, an event he’s won twice. Some other interesting names are teeing it up like Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington and 2017 champion Lucas Bjerregaard.
While the field isn’t stacked like some other tournaments we have seen this year on the European Tour, there are a lot of solid golfers who have the opportunity to break through, and either get their career back on track like Nicolas Colsaerts last week or break through for their first victory.

Tom Lewis Either Wins or Doesn’t Come Close
Defending champion Tom Lewis is without question someone worth keeping an eye on to lift the Portugal Masters trophy for the third time in his career. The only problem is he’s wildly unpredictable at this event, because outside of those two victories, he hasn’t had a result better than T-29th in six other attempts.

So what golfer will you get? He won in his only Korn Ferry Tour start to lock up his PGA Tour status for the 2019-20 season, but followed that up by missing four of five cuts worldwide, apart from a top-five finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links. He’s been wildly inconsistent so at +2200 it’s smarter to risk that he’ll have an off week at the Portugal Masters as opposed to yet another victory there.
Lucas Bjerregaard the Safer Play
2017 champion Lucas Bjerregaard is without question the more likely to get it done again over Lewis, as he’s been much more consistent on this golf course.
Since his middling tournament debut in 2014 he’s posted really strong results. At +2000 you’re not getting tremendous value with Lucas, but you know he’s likely to be in the mix come Sunday based on course knowledge and history.

2019 Portugal Masters Best Value Picks
- Adri Arnaus (+2000): Sensational rookie season has resulted in everything but a victory. Three runner-up finishes to go along with three other top-10’s. Very hit or miss player, however, with three top 10’s in last seven starts (2nd, 4th, 6th), but also three missed cuts and a T-48th in that span.
- Callum Shinkwin (+5000): In search of first career Euro Tour victory, Shinkwin had finished T-5th and T-10th in his last two starts before a T-48th at last week’s Open de France. Hits it a mile, ranking eight in driving distance on tour.
- Padraig Harrington (+6600): Blast from the past name that has quietly been playing some solid golf in the last month and a half on the European Tour – 12th-15th-26th-46th before missed cut last week. Winner here just three years ago.
