  • There are 32 players within five shots of the lead in a jam packed leaderboard

After three rounds of the Safeway Open, it is anybody’s chance to win with so many players near the top, and with the top six players combining for just three PGA Tour victories, any number of scenarios could play out in Sunday’s final round.

Two-time Safeway Open champion Brendan Steele entered the week as one of three co-favorites to win outright, and he finds himself with a chance at snagging yet another title as he’s four strokes behind the leaders.

Of the three at the top, James Hahn has won twice, Brian Stuard once, and 46-year-old Cameron Percy has never lifted a trophy on the biggest stage, meaning their odds to win are all relatively close to one another.

Top Of The Board

Trying to pick a champion among the list of contenders feels like a crapshoot more than normal simply because there really isn’t a whole lot of winning pedigree among them, as noted already. James Hahn has taken home two titles in his career on solid golf courses (Riviera, Quail Hollow), so of the three tied, he presents the player who has closed out multiple victories before.

Hahn has been putting brilliantly this week, where he gained just shy of five strokes on the field on the greens through two rounds, so he’s the golfer to look at. That’s allowed him to rack up 19 birdies through three rounds. Brian Stuard has that lone victory at the 2016 Zurich Classic but he came into this week having missed five of six cuts, which has to give you a little bit of pause.

Cameron Percy has never won, with his best result being a tie for second a decade ago, so it would be a minor surprise if he was able to outlast everyone come Sunday evening.

Best Live Value Picks at Safeway Open

  1. Emiliano Grillo (+1200): He knows how to get it done on this track, having won the 2015 Safeway Open. Grillo starts the final round just two shots back after shooting 65 on moving day. Just three bogeys on the week. Two top-10’s in his last four starts, including a tie for third at the 3M Open.
  2. Russell Knox (+1800): Fairly surprising that his odds are this long given that he’s won twice on tour, unlike quite a few of the players in contention. Has gone bogey free through the first three rounds. Game is finally rounding into shape, making the weekend in his last two starts following ten straight missed cuts.
  3. Brendan Steele (+4100): Even though he starts the final round four strokes back of the leaders, this is incredible value for a player who won this tournament back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017. Made seven straight cuts so he’s been playing some quality golf before this week.
