Patrick Reed’s reputation proceeds him yet again, after a bizarre situation on the 10th hole Saturday. He claimed his ball was imbedded after an errant approach shot, thus giving him a free drop, yet video suggested otherwise. That dropped him squarely in another referendum on his integrity – or lack thereof. He was able to get up and down for par but struggled on the back nine until a closing birdie allowed him to grab a share of the lead with Carlos Ortiz after 54 holes in yet another chapter of his turbulent career.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, who came into the week as the top two favorites to win outright are squarely in the mix, with the Spaniard two behind the co-leaders and the Ulsterman a further shot behind in a crowded leaderboard that will surely produce more carnage on Sunday.

Controversy Meets Patrick Reed Again

It seems wherever Patrick Reed goes chaos ensues, and Saturday was an shining example of that. Reed explained that his ball had to have imbedded in the ground without seeking out a rules official beforehand, thereby giving him a free drop which allowed him to save par, setting social media ablaze.

Most other players would wilt under such public scrutiny, but Reed seems to thrive on being the villain of the PGA Tour, and it has spurred him on to past victories, including the 2018 Masters. His four bogeys on the back nine Saturday, coupled with the fact that there’s tons of luminaries behind him would cause me to steer clear of a wager on him as the favorite.

In the two days he’s played Torrey Pines South (he played the North in round one), he’s hit just half the greens in regulation. That’s not a recipe for success heading into Sunday.

Third in scrambling this week, as he got it up and down on all six occasions Saturday.
