The semi-finals are set for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play with four underdogs advancing. 30th ranked Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win his first PGA Tour event over Matt Kuchar, the 52nd ranked golfer. Unheralded 31st ranked Frenchmen Victor Perez will do battle with 32nd ranked Billy Horschel, who won the 2014 FedEx Cup.

Sunday Morning Semi-Finals Match Odds

Billy Horschel More Decorated Than Perez

Many people’s brackets would’ve been busted trying to predict this matchup in the semi-finals, with Victor Perez, a one time European Tour winner coming off a T-9 at the Players Championship two weeks ago. Billy Horschel has won the FedEx Cup in addition to five PGA Tour victories, and was T-2 three events ago at the most recent World Golf Championships event at the Concession.

Billy Horschel and Victor Perez are the first two semifinalists; they'll play each other tomorrow morning.

Perez defeated Marc Leishman and Sungjae Im in the round robin and Robert Macintyre and Sergio Garcia to get to the semis while Horschel had to go through a group headed by Collin Morikawa, the WGC-Workday Championship winner that he was a runner-up in. He took care of Kevin Streelman and then Tommy Fleetwood in extra holes.

Whoever wins this match will likely be the underdog heading into the final, but Horschel is more decorated and has played better in the States, which is the surer bet.

Matt Kuchar A Match Play Savant

Despite Scottie Scheffler being the favorite to win his match against Matt Kuchar, it’s hard to argue with the grizzled veteran’s success at this tournament, winning in 2013, and he finished runner-up in the most recent WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Kuchar also got through the group of death, defeating defending champ Kevin Kisner and major champions Justin Thomas and Louis Oosthuizen. Then he dispatched three-time major champ Jordan Spieth Saturday morning and Brian Harman, who won his match with eight straight birdies against Bubba Watson.

The only American player ever to get his first @PGATOUR victory at a World Golf Championship event was Kevin Sutherland at the Match Play in 2002. Scottie Scheffler would join him with a win tomorrow.

The last two victories by Scheffler were very impressive against match play aficionado Ian Poulter and updated tournament favorite Jon Rahm. He’s never won a PGA Tour event, though he’s very close to breaking through. I’d prefer to take the decorated champ in Kuchar who has 33 wins in this format.
