The first major championship of 2023 is finally upon us, and there are plenty of storylines to follow at the Masters. Two of the biggest ones center around defending champion Scottie Scheffler attempting to earn back-to-back green jackets, and whether Rory McIlroy can complete the career grand slam at Augusta. They’re co-favorites to win the 2023 Masters outright.

With just 88 players teeing it up at this event, it makes it slightly easier to potentially earn some money wagering on who might jump out in front after 18 holes. Read on for first-round leader odds and analysis.

The forecast calls for it to be a mix of sun and clouds throughout Thursday. Temperatures will be in the high 60’s for those going off first, and it’ll reach mid 80’s for golfers playing in the afternoon. The wind will be consistent all day, with gusts between 8-10 MPH.

A benefit for those teeing it up in the morning is the exact same as it is every week – less-bumpy greens with fewer players chewing them up.

Jon Rahm With Early Tee Time

Jon Rahm (10:42 tee time) needs no introduction, with his brilliant three victories already on the campaign. He’s weirdly flying under the radar heading into Augusta, after an uncharacteristic last three events, one of which saw him withdraw after an opening 71 at the Players Championship. However, he’s put up some incredible ‘strokes gained’ numbers in the last 24 rounds.

Jon Rahm’s Strokes Gained Stats In Last 24 Rounds

Total Short Game Putting Tee-To-Green Approach Ball Striking
1 2 3 3 7 10

Rahm has had success at Augusta National also, posting four straight top-10’s from 2018-2021. In addition, he’s tops in first round scoring for the season, and he can take advantage of a course in the morning with less wear and tear on it. Rahm is first in total strokes gained, and best in birdie average on the PGA Tour.

Pick: Jon Rahm (+1800)

Max Homa a Top Player on Thursdays

Max Homa (1:36pm) is an extremely fast starter, as he ranks third best on Thursday’s this season. He’s competing with defending champ Scottie Scheffler in round one, and he should be able to keep up with him.

PGA Tour First Round Scoring Average Leaders This Season

Golfer Average Score Odds
1. Jon Rahm 67.38 +1800
2. Scottie Scheffler 68.22 +1600
3. Max Homa 68.56 +3500
3. Viktor Hovland 68.56 +3500
6. Xander Schauffele 68.75 +3000
6. Sungjae Im 68.75 +4000
10. Keith Mitchell 68.92 +6000
11. Collin Morikawa 69.00 +3000
22. Si Woo Kim 69.42 +6000
22. Seamus Power 69.42 +7500

For the season, he’s won twice and has shot nothing worse than a 72 in his first 18 holes. In the last 24 rounds, he’s second in SG: approach, fourth in putting and total strokes gained. In addition, in the last four Thursday’s, he’s third in total strokes gained and ball striking.

Pick: Max Homa (+3500)

Corey Conners Loves Augusta National

Corey Conners (1:12pm) is coming in with a ton of confidence, having won last Sunday’s Valero Texas Open. For the week, he was first in greens in regulation, SG: tee-to-green and third in driving accuracy. He’s in a superstar group with Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose.

He’s also been fantastic at the Masters, racking up three straight top-10’s (10th, 8th and 6th the last three years). In that span, only three golfers have gained more total strokes than the Canadian. In the last twelve rounds on tour, he’s ninth in ball striking, offering solid value for a golfer a little bit down the betting board.

Pick: Corey Conners (+4500)
