The biggest purse of the season to date is up for grabs at TPC Sawgrass this week, and for the second straight tournament, Tommy Fleetwood has a share of the 36-hole lead.

Fleetwood opened 65, 67 to sit at -12, where he’s joined by world number 6 Rory McIlroy.

McIlory, who went off Thursday as the co-favorite, is seeking his first PGA Tour win since last year’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The Top of the Board

This should be Rory’s tournament to lose. The four-time Major Champion leads the field in greens in regulation and strokes gained tee to green, and is red hot with the flat stick.

His +150 odds are justified, but too short to wager on given his struggles closing out tournaments lately. McIlroy has failed to win each of the last nine times he’s been in the final group on Sunday, including last week at Bay Hill.

Fleetwood meanwhile, is still searching for his first career PGA Tour win, and until he closes out a tournament, I can’t lay +275 against this caliber of field.

All Day

Jason Day threw everybody off the scent after withdrawing with a back injury at the API last week.

The 2016 champ is showing no signs of injury at Sawgrass, though, carding the second-most birdies and gaining the seventh most strokes total thus far.

At +1600 and just four shots back, he’s in prime position to make a charge to the top of the leaderboard.

Best Live Value Picks at The Players Championship

  1. Keith Mitchell (+4500): He’s one of the hottest players on the planet right now after a win at Honda and a 6th at Bay Hill.  He leads the field in strokes gained off the tee, and racked up six birdies and an eagle in round 2.
  2. Byeong-Hun An (+5000): He’s fourth in the field in strokes gained tee to green and tied for sixth in birdies.  One of the best ball strikers on tour, he’s gained almost 2 strokes on approach this week, after gaining over 9 the last two weeks combined.  He has two runner-up finishes in less than a year, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets into the winner’s circle.
  3. Matt Kuchar (+10000): The 2012 champ has been dialed in with his irons all week, gaining 3.2 shots on approach through 36 holes, but his putter has let him down.  He’s typically one of the best in the game on the greens, and if his putting regresses back to the mean, he could be right there on Sunday.
