A matchup of two intriguing rookie pitchers highlights Wednesday’s 15-game schedule in MLB.
San Diego Padres left-hander Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.59 ERA) will face the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Taylor Widener (1-0, 2.82) at 9:40 p.m. ET at Chase Field in Phoenix. Both hurlers made their major league debuts last year as relievers before being moved into the rotation in 2021.
The New York Mets’ Jacob deGrom (2-1, 0.31) will be hard-pressed to top his last start when he pitches against the visiting Boston Red Sox and Nick Pivetta (2-0, 3.48) at Citi Field. deGrom struck out 15 while pitching a two-hit shutout against the Washington Nationals last Friday. The Mets are Wednesday’s biggest favorites with -265 odds.
Left-hander Steven Matz (4-0, 2.31) will try to keep his record perfect for the Toronto Blue Jays as he opposes the Washington Nationals’ Erick Fedde (1-2, 5.51) at 7:07 p.m. at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla. Matz has a 1-7 career record against the Nationals.
After analyzing those games as well as the rest of the card, here are the three best bets for Wednesday:

Pick 1: Angels (-129)
The Los Angeles Angels visit the Texas Rangers at 8:05 p.m. at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Alex Cobb (1-1, 6.28) goes for the Angels against Dane Dunning (1-0, 3.06).
The Rangers opened the series with a 6-1 victory on Tuesday night. Joey Gallo ended the longest home run drought of his career at 20 games.

That performance coupled with Cobb getting rocked for five runs in 2.2 innings by the Houston Astros his last time out seemingly make the Angels a risky bet in this one.
However, Cobb was at least serviceable in his other two starts this season, allowing three runs in each over 5.2 and six innings. What makes Cobb especially attractive in this matchup is his 2.90 career ERA against the Rangers in six starts.

Dunning has pitched well for the Rangers after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox in an offseason trade. However, he also has made just 11 major league starts and that inexperienced showed in his last outing.
Facing his old team, Dunning shut out the White Sox over the first two innings. He never made it out of the third, though, as Dunning let the game get away from him by allowing Chicago to score five runs.
The oddsmakers are favoring the Angels and Cobb. They are right on this one.
Pick 2: White Sox (-230)
Unbeaten left-hander Carlos Rodon (3-0, 0.47) takes the mound for the White Sox when they host the Detroit Tigers at 8:10 p.m. at Guaranteed Rate Field. Rookie Casey Mize (1-2, 5.23) pitches for the Tigers.
Rodon will have a week off between starts but that might not necessarily be a bad thing. The White Sox will monitor Rodon’s workload closely this season after he pitched a combined 42.1 innings in 2019 and 2020 when he injured his elbow and underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery.
As far as early Comeback Player of the Year candidates, Rodon is right at the top of the list. He has allowed one earned run and five hits in 19 innings over three starts.

And, of course, there was hit no-hitter against Cleveland on April 14. Rodon threw 114 pitches in that game then 110 in five innings five days when also facing the Clevelands. So, he could use the rest.
Mize has struck out 12 batters in 9.2 career innings against the White Sox. Last season, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against them.
However, Mize has been hammered for 11 runs in 9.2 innings while losing his last two seasons. The Tigers also made five errors in their 5-4 victory over the White Sox on Tuesday night.
Official scorer Bill Seiple @wdseiple has charged the Tigers with four errors in four innings, and I can't say I blame him.

That makes it a little easier to lay the big number.
Pick 3: Mariners-Astros Under 8.5 (-108)
The Astros won a low-scoring affair at home over the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Tuesday night. The teams meet at 8:10 p.m. and runs could be scarce again as Justin Dunn (1-0, 3.68) starts for the Mariners against Zack Greinke (2-1, 2.76).
Houston’s Cristian Javier went seven strong innings and combined with two relievers on a two-hitter Tuesday night. Greinke could very well do the same.
Dusty Baker on Cristian Javier: “U see how calm & cool his demeanor is on the mound. He spilled coffee all down his pants & everybody wanted him to change it & he didn’t want to change it.Maybe next time he pitches he’ll spill coffee on himself again. Was great watching him pitch” pic.twitter.com/qMV4AbgIsd

Greinke has recorded quality starts in four of his five outings this season, including eight scoreless innings in a 1-0 win over the Mariners on April 17. Those were the only QS by the Astros all season until Javier’s.
Dunn has the stuff to be an above average MLB pitcher, but poor control has held him back. However, since walking eight in 4.2 innings in his first start of the season, Dunn has issued just three bases on balls in 10 innings in his last two outings.
