April 29th MLB Odds and Picks – Yankees Look to Continue Momentum

A rematch of a series from last year’s expanded playoffs is among the 10 games on Thursday’s schedule in MLB.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers open a four-game series at 7:40 p.m. ET at American Family Field in Milwaukee. Trevor Bauer (3-0, 2.53 ERA) will pitch for Los Angeles against left-hander Eric Lauer, who will be making his season debut for the Brewers. The Dodgers swept a best-of-three National League wild card series last fall.

Another pitcher making his season debut is the Tampa Bay Rays rookie Shane McClanahan. He will face the Oakland Athletics’ Chris Bassitt (2-2, 4.13) at 1:10 p.m. at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

At -182, the New York Yankees are the day’s biggest favorites as they visit the Baltimore Orioles at 1:05 p.m. at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Lefty Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 4.57) will toe the slab for the Yankees against Jorge Lopez (1-3, 8.15).

Pick 1: Yankees (-182)

While the Yankees are a still a disappointing 11-13 so far this season, they are beginning to emerge from their funk.

They climbed out of last place in the American League East on Wednesday night with a 7-0 victory over the Orioles for their fifth win in the last seven games. Domingo German and Michael King combined on a four-hit shutout while Mike Ford, Gio Urshela and Clint Frazier homered.

The seven runs were the most for the Yankees since scoring a season-high eight April 11.

Montgomery lasted just 4.2 innings in his last outing, a no-decision against Cleveland. He gave up three runs, all in the first inning.

Montgomery has had success against the Orioles during his career, though, going 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA in eight starts.

Lopez faced the Yankees on April 5 and allowed four runs in 4.2 innings. He has been charged with 16 runs in 17.1 innings this season and given up at least one home run in all four starts.

Look for the awakening Yankees’ offense to do some damage here.

Pick 2: Phillies-Cardinals under 7 (-112)

The Philadelphia Phillies and Aaron Nola (2-1, 2.84) face the Cardinals and left-hander Kwang-Hyun Kim (1-0, 4.15) at 1:15 p.m. in the finale of a four-game series.

The Phillies have taken two of the first three games in this set. The teams have totaled just 18 runs, including the Phillies winning 5-3 on Wednesday night in a game in which star right fielder Bryce Harper was hit in the face by a pitch.

Slumping Andrew McCutchen returned to the Phillies lineup after sitting out two games and knocked in the game-winning run.

Nola has changed his approach this season and is throwing many more four-seam fastballs than sinkers. The move is paying off as Nola shut out the Cardinals on two hits April 18 then beat the Colorado Rockies in his last start in Denver when he allowed four runs in seven innings.

Kim has taken just two turns in the rotation after starting the season on the injured list with back tightness.

The veteran from South Korea looked sharp his last time out as he struck out eight while holding the Cincinnati Reds to one run in 5.2 innings.

Pick 3: Red Sox-Rangers under 8.5 (-103)

The visiting Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers open a four-game series at 8:05 p.m. at Globe Life Park in Arlington with lefty Martin Perez (0-1, 5.71) facing Kyle Gibson (2-0, 2.30).

Gibson did not make it through the first inning on opening day against the Kansas City Royals but has been quite good in his four subsequent tarts. He has given up just two earned runs in 27 innings for a 0.67 ERA.

Opponents are also hitting just .235 against Gibson this season.

Perez has pitched just 3.2 innings in each of his last two starts. However, he will be facing a Rangers offense that has scored four or fewer runs in four of the last five games and ranks 22nd in MLB with an average of 3.96 runs a game.

The Red Sox have not scored more than six runs in any of their last eight games and been held four or less in six of them.
