The difference in recent fortunes between the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros can be measured by their recent postseason success.
Sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays in their AL Wild Card set, the Mariners won a playoff series for the first time since 2001. That was so long ago, Houston was still playing in the National League at the time.
The Astros have won four playoff series over the past 25 months. Houston is in the playoffs for the sixth year in a row. The AL West champions played in three World Series over the past five seasons, winning the Fall Classic in 2017.
As these two AL West rivals prepare to square off in the AL Divisional Series, oddsmakers are going with the experienced hand. Houston is set as -260 favorites.

Most of the games weren’t close contests. Just three of 19 games were one-run decisions. There were 14 Astros vs Mariners games that were decided by 3+ runs.
The Seattle #Mariners, down 8-1, pull off the stunning comeback to beat the #BlueJays, 10-9, and a date with the Houston #Astros. They are guaranteed to play a postseason game in front of their home fans for the first time since 2001.

Astros vs Mariners Betting Trends
The Mariners went 83-79 against the runline, fifth-best in the league. However, Houston was better, going 86-76 ATR. That was #3 in the AL.

At 41-40, Houston is the only AL playoff team to post a winning home record against the runline. Seattle was 35-46 on the runline at home during the regular season. On the road, the Mariners were an impressive 49-34 ATR. The Astros were 45-36.
In head to head meetings, Houston went 11-8 ATR against Seattle. Eleven of their 19 games went under.
Houston vs Seattle Probable Pitchers
With a six-day rest since the conclusion of the regular season, the Astros can set up their pitching rotation any way they’d like. In the MLB lineups, ace right-hander Justin Verlander, the chalk in the AL Cy Young odds, will be getting the ball for Game 1. Verlander, 39, led the AL with 18 wins.
In his first season back from Tommy John surgery, 39-year-old Justin Verlander finishes the year with a 1.75 ERA in 175 innings. It is the lowest ERA in a 162-game season by a qualified American League starter since Pedro Martinez's 1.74 mark in 2000.

Look for Framber Valdez and Lance McCullers Jr to follow, with Jose Urquidy the likely Game 4 starter. He’s posted three World Series wins for the Astros.
The Mariners went with righty Luis Castillo and lefty Robbie Ray in the two wins over Toronto. Â That leaves right-hander Logan Gilbert (13-6, 3.20, 1.18) as Seattle’s most probable Game 1 starter. Rookie George Kirby (8-5, 3.39, 1.21) worked an inning in relief in Game 2 against Toronto, probably leaving him out of the Game 1 equation.
Seattle vs Houston Team Stats
The Astros are all about pitching. Houston is the only AL staff to post an ERA under 3.00 (2.90) and a WHIP under 1.10 (1.09). The Astros were second in MLB in both of these categories, as well as in batting average allowed (.212). As well, the bullpen chalked up an AL-best 53 saves.
Mariners vs Astros
90-72 | W-L | 92-70 |
5 | Playoff Seeding | 1 |
690 | Runs Scored | 737 |
197 | Home Runs | 214 |
.230 | AVG | .248 |
.705 | OPS | .743 |
3.59 | ERA | 2.90 |
1.19 | WHIP | 1.09 |
Seattle was fifth in the AL in ERA (3.59) and WHIP (1.19), and fourth in runs allowed (623) and strikeouts (1,391). Offensive, the Mariners were also fourth in the league in home runs (197). But the Astros clouted 214 dingers to finish second in the league.
Mariners vs Astros Series Prediction
The Astros are the better team, either with the ball or the bat in their hands. On top of that, Houston is a well-rested team.
Astros-Mariners should be a fantastic series. Mariners have the arms and bats to hang. Astros all the experience. T Mobile Park will be rocking.

Getting the better of a Toronto team that was also new to the playoffs was one thing. The battle-tested Astros will be too much for Seattle to handle
