About Last Night

For the third consecutive game, the Rays and Blue Jays were separated by only one run. Friday and Saturday’s games required extra innings, with both teams coming away with a victory.

On Sunday, the Rays grabbed a 5-4 win in “regulation,” so to speak. Yandy Diaz chipped in for the Rays, with his third consecutive multi-hit game (which is his ninth of the month). He is certainly hot right now.

The Blue Jays needed five relievers to eat up seven innings after starter Trent Thornton exited with right elbow inflammation.

Roark vs. Rays Rematch

Monday marks Tanner Roark’s second start this season versus the Tampa Bay Rays, and he’d certainly like for it to go better than the first time around.

Roark took a no decision — in a game the Blue Jays won 12-4 — but did little to inspire in four innings, with four hits, four walks and three earned runs allowed.

Dating back to last season, Roark has gone eight consecutive starts without completing six innings. That’s a concerning trend for the Blue Jays, given how many bullpen pieces were required to contribute on Sunday.

Blue Jays Can’t Solve Snell

Blake Snell owns a 2.11 ERA in his past five outings versus Toronto, which includes 33 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. He has been largely unsolvable for his AL East rival.

Looking more specifically at the current Blue Jays, it’s worth noting that the entire team is a combined 9-for-59 (.153) against him lifetime, with one home run and only three RBIs.

Snell has been cruising this year, with a 2-0 record and 3.00 ERA. He has won his past two starts, and in his past three has 14 strikeouts versus only eight hits allowed.

Bad Formula for Blue Jays

The combination of Roark (a starter who doesn’t typically go deep) and a taxed bullpen is already bad enough. Add in the fact that the Rays have their ace on the mound, and this is just downright concerning.

Also, the Blue Jays are still without their top offensive player, Bo Bichette, who is sidelined with a knee injury. That might be starting to catch up with Toronto, which has just 11 total hits the past two games.

Pick: Tampa Bay Rays, -225
