It’s been two close games so far, but the Los Angeles Dodgers (71-46, 35-26 away) will be looking for the sweep over the New York Mets (59-57, 36-22 home) on Sunday night at Citi Field. First pitch is set for 7:10pm ET.
Saturday’s contest was the definition of a pitcher’s duel, with Cody Bellinger’s clutch double in the top of the 10th inning giving LA the 2-1 victory. The series finale will see ace Max Scherzer get the ball for the visitors, while Carlos Carrasco will be looking to find his footing after a few shaky appearances since returning from the IL.

Probable Pitchers
The Mets will have a tough road to winning Sunday’s contest with Scherzer on the hill. The three-time Cy Young winner has been lights out since coming over to the Dodgers at the MLB Trade Deadline, giving up just two earned runs in as many starts. Last time out against the Phillies, the veteran tossed 3.1 innings, surrendering three hits while striking out six. Unfortunately, his outing was cut short due to a lengthy rain delay in the fourth inning.
The Dodgers recorded their 12th shutout of the season last night, tied with the Brewers, Giants and Braves for most in MLB this season.

His debut with LA was signature, though. He absolutely dealt vs Houston, going seven innings, allowing two runs while racking up 10 K’s. On the year, the 37-year-old has a 9-4 record and 2.67 ERA. This will be his first appearance against New York this season, but Scherzer has a career 2.70 ERA in 23 starts versus the Mets.
Scherzer vs Carrasco
9-4 | Record | 0-0 |
2.67 | ERA | 6.75 |
121.1 | Innings Pitched | 9.1 |
163 | SO | 9 |
29 | BB | 2 |
It’s been a disappointing first season with the Mets for Carrasco, who came over from the Cleveland Indians alongside Francisco Lindor in the offseason. The right-hander was expected to be a staple in their rotation, but multiple injuries have kept him off the mound.

Carrasco finally made his 2021 debut on July 30th, tossing four innings of one-run baseball. While his next outing was respectable as well, the Venezuelan struggled most recently against the Nationals, lasting just one inning after being touched up for four earned runs. The Dodgers are a very unfamiliar opponent for Carrasco as well. Throughout 12 years in the big leagues, with the majority being in the American League, he’s never faced the defending champions.

New York hasn’t been great lately, going 4-6 in their last 10 games. They did sweep the Nationals before this Dodgers series but prior to that, the Mets lost three straight to NL East rivals Philadelphia, who are currently 1.5 games ahead of them for the division lead.

For a team full of impact bats, they’ve been dreadful offensively this season. NY sits towards the bottom of the big leagues in runs, hits, homers, and average. Thankfully their pitching has been decent, but the Mets have also dealt with their injury problems on the mound.
The Dodgers, on the other hand, have won seven of their last 10 but are still 4.5 games behind the red-hot San Francisco Giants, who are enjoying a six-game winning streak. LA has received some timely hitting in this Mets series, with Will Smith clubbing a go-ahead homer in extras on Friday, then Bellinger coming through with the heroics on Saturday.

All around, Los Angeles is a fundamentally sound ballclub. They swing the bats well and dominate on the bump. It’s an uphill battle to win their division, but with Scherzer on the mound in the series finale, a clean sweep of the Mets could definitely be in the cards before the Dodgers head back home.
Dodgers vs Mets Prediction
There has been some success against Scherzer throughout the New York lineup, but it’s extremely tough to bet against one of the greatest pitchers the sport has ever seen. He’s been unhittable in a Dodgers uniform and I think you’ll see a similar trend again, with LA generating some offense off Carrasco, who is still getting comfortable.
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (-105)
