The San Diego Padres will try to stay on the winning track when they host the New York Mets at 10:10 p.m. ET Friday at Petco Park.

The Padres (35-23) snapped a four-game losing streak Thursday with a 4-3 victory over the Mets in the opener of a four-game series. The Mets (27-22), who lead the National League East, lost for the just second time in their last eight games.

In a matchup of left-handers, the Mets’ Joey Lucchesi (1-3, 6.56 ERA) will face his former team and be opposed by Blake Snell (1-2, 5.55).

Lucchesi Returns “Home”

Lucchesi will be making his first appearance against the Padres. He spent his first three season with them before being traded in January.

In his initial year with the Mets, Lucchesi has served as a swingman as he has made five starts and three relief appearances. He has not pitched more than four innings in any outing and is 0-2 with a 7.16 ERA as a starter.

Lucchesi’s last outing came May 27 against the Colorado Rockies in New York and he did not factor in the decision. In 3.2 innings, Lucchesi allowed two runs (one earned hits) while walking three and striking out two.

Lucchesi has had success at Petco Park with a 13-8 record and 3.19 ERA in 33 games, including 32 starts.

The Mets will likely rely heavily on their bullpen with Lucchesi starting. The relievers have been up to the task lately with a 1.93 ERA in the last 10 games.

Left fielder Tommy Pham is expected to play after sitting out Thursday’s game. He had a cut on his chin and a sore jaw after colliding with shortstop Ha-Seong Kim on Wednesday while chasing a popup in a game against the Cubs in Chicago.

Kim was back in action Thursday, playing second base. He filled in on Wednesday for star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who had right oblique tightness.

Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. returned to the lineup Thursday and hit his 17th home run, which ties him for the major league lead, while going 2-for-4.

The Padres have scored four runs or less in five straight games.

Struggling Snell

Snell has been a major disappointment for the Padres, who acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays in a December trade for four young players.

Snell has lost his last two starts, getting tagged for 12 runs in a combined 6.1 innings. Last Sunday at Houston, Snell gave up seven runs on five hits and three walks in three innings with three strikeouts against the Astros.

Out of 11 outings this season, Snell has made only one quality start. That is also the only time he has pitched six innings. Snell has gone less than five innings in six starts.

Snell has pitched much better at home, though. He is 1-0 with a 2.10 ERA in five starts in San Diego and 0-2 with a 9.70 ERA in six road games.

This will be Snell’s third career start against the Mets. He has a 1-1 record and 2.08 ERA.

Infielder Jonathan Villar, who has been seeing regular duty at third base with the Mets suffering myriad injuries, sat out Thursday night’s game and is considered day-to-day. He strained his right hamstring Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor is starting to heat up. He has a six-game hitting streak in which he is 10 for 26 (.385) with eight runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run and three RBIs.

Catcher James McCann is also swinging a hot bat. In his last six games, he is 10 for 22 (.455) with five runs, three doubles, three homers and eight RBIs.

About Last Night

In Thursday night’s game, Tatis caught a bit of a break as his home run slipped out of the glove of center fielder Mason Williams. Tatis also dashed home aggressively on a wild pitch.

Yu Darvish (6-1) allowed two runs in 5.1 innings for the win. Mark Melancon escaped a ninth-inning jam when Kevin Pillar grounded sharply into a game-ending double play with two on to notch his MLB-leading 18th save.

McCann hit a two-run homer and Billy McKinney had an RBI triple off the wall in the eighth that nearly tied it as the Mets fought back from a 4-0 deficit before falling a run short.

Slight Edge to Padres

The teams have played on nearly even terms since 2014 as the Padres hold a 20-19 edge in that span.

This pitching matchup does not inspire much confidence. The lean, though, goes to Snell because of how well he has pitched at Petco Park.
