Two teams headed in opposite directions meet when the New York Mets visit the San Francisco Giants at 9:45 p.m. ET Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Oracle Park.

The Mets (59-58) were swept in a three-game series by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend at home and have lost 12 of their last 17 games. The Giants (76-42) have won seven of their last eight games and 12 of 15 to improve upon the best record in the major leagues and are favored again.

Mets vs Giants Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
New York Mets +165 +1.5 (-120) Over 8 (-115)
San Francisco Giants -190 -1.5 (+100) Under 8 (-105)

Odds as of August 16th at DraftKings.

The Giants opened as -180 favorites on the moneyline and that has gone up. It is forecasted to be a windy night at Oracle Park with a west wind at 19-24 mph and gusts up to 32 mph to go with a game time temperature of 67 degrees.

Probable Pitchers

The Mets will send left-hander Rich Hill (6-4, 4.05) to the mound against Kevin Gausman (11-5, 2.29).

Hill has not given the Mets’ pitching staff the boost they were looking for when they acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays last month in a trade. Since coming to New York, he has no record and a 5.00 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance.

Hill vs Gausman

Rich Hill
VS
Kevin Gausman
6-4 Record 11-5
4.05 ERA 2.29
4.45 xERA 3.27
1.19 WHIP 0.96
2.40 SO/W 3.77

Hill pitched in relief for the first time this season in his last outing last Tuesday against the Washington Nationals in New York. Taking over at the resumption of a suspended game, Hill went three innings and was touched for three runs and four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Hill’s struggles with the Mets haven’t been for a lack of hustle, though.

Out of his 22 starts this season, just five have been quality. He has also taken 12 turns in the rotation since his last QS on May 25 while with the Rays.

Hill has a 3-1 record and 3.75 ERA in 10 road starts this season. He is 2-3 with a 4.38 in 12 starts at night.

Though he hasn’t faced them this season, the 41-year-old Hill has been tough on the Giants throughout his long career. He is 8-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 17 starts, including 2-1 with a 3.21 in eight outings at Oracle Park.

Gausman has won back-to-back starts, allowing three runs (two earned) in 11 innings. He pitched five innings to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks at home last Wednesday, being charged with two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Gausman has 15 quality starts in his 23 outings this season but only one QS in his last five games. At home, Gausman is 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 10 starts and has a 5-3 record and a 2.95 ERA in 13 night starts.

Gausman has never beaten the Mets in his career, going 0-3 with a 5.09 ERA in four games (three starts).

Two longtime Giants, catcher Buster Posey and first baseman Brandon Belt, have had success against Hill.

Posey is 10 for 20 (.500) with a double and a home run. Belt has gone 6 for 15 (.400) with two doubles and a homer.

Mets outfielder Kevin Pillar has extensive history against Gausman from their days in the American League East. Pillar is 14 for 39 (.359), though with only one extra-base hit (a double) and 10 strikeouts.

Mets right fielder Anthony Conforto is on a 14-game on base streak, hitting .333 (14 for 42) with 10 runs, four doubles, two home runs, five RBIs and seven walks. In his last six games, first baseman Pete Alonso is 8 for 25 (.320) with five runs four doubles, one homer, two RBIs and a walk.

Mets-Giants Pick

The Mets and Giants will be meeting for the first time since July 21, 2019. The Giants won the season series 4-3 that year, including taking three of four in San Francisco. Gausman hasn’t been as dominant lately as he was earlier in the season and Hill has had plenty of success against the Giants. However, the Giants are rolling right now while the Mets are reeling.

Ride the wave.
