  •  The Mets vs Pirates odds favor New York as -200 moneyline favorites on Monday, September 5, at 12:35pm ET

  • New York will give the ball to Taijuan Walker (10-3, 3.45 ERA), while Pittsburgh will counter with Mitch Keller (4-10, 4.43 ERA)
  • Read below for the Mets vs Pirates odds and betting prediction

At this point, the Pittsburgh Pirates (49-84, 26-39 home) are probably clamouring for the NFL season to start. That way, the city of Pittsburgh can start focusing their attention on the Steelers, and leave the Pirates alone to play out the string.

The NL Central cellar dwellers enter play on Monday versus the New York Mets (85-50, 39-27 away) losers of four straight and 12 of their past 14 overall. To no one’s surprise, oddsmakers didn’t waste anytime installing the Mets as the lofty road chalk.

New York vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers

New York, a top-four World Series odds contender, will give the ball to Taijuan Walker. The 30-year-old is in the midst of a career season, and is on pace to set personal bests in both wins and ERA.

Walker has suffered just one loss since July 7, and has allowed three of fewer runs in all but three of his 23 starts. Last time out he surrendered three runs over 5 innings to the Dodgers, while holding the Yankees to two runs over 5 innings in the previous start.

Those two outings came against the top-two offenses in baseball, and now he gets to face one of the worst – more on Pittsburgh’s woeful bats later.

Walker vs Keller Stats

Taijuan Walker
VS
Mitch Keller
10-3 Record 4-10
3.45 ERA 6.12
1.21 WHIP 1.52
.240 OBA .307
2.1 SO/W Ratio 2.5

The Pirates will counter with Mitch Keller. The right-hander put together a nice outing in his last start, after struggling in his previous two appearances. Keller held Milwaukee to four hits and two runs over 6 innings, striking out a season-high 10 batters along the way.

The effort came after he was shelled by both Atlanta and Boston, yielding 12 total runs in just 5.2 innings of work. Keller has virtually zero history against this year’s version of the Mets, and is actually caching New York at an opportune time.

Mets vs Pirates Betting Analysis

The Mets crossed the plate just twice on Saturday and Sunday combined versus the last place Washington Nationals. New York could muster only six hits on Sunday, after recording just four the day before. The latest Mets loss, their fourth in the past seven games, ends a week in which they averaged less than three runs per game, and saw their lead atop the NL East shrink to a single game over the Braves.

A major area of concern for the New York offense at the moment, is the current slump of Pete Alonso. The NL MVP odds contender has just four hits in his past seven games, with only one run scored. Just one of those hits went for extra bases, while his August slash line of .254/.331/.421 was his worst of any month this season.

Speaking of struggling bats, few teams have hit as poorly as Pittsburgh this season. The Pirates scored just four runs total in their three-game set over the weekend versus Toronto, and have been held below four runs in 10 of their past 14 contests.

They’re slashing .206/.250/.333 over the past 14 days, and rank bottom-three in MLB in runs per game, OBP, slugging and OPS.

Mets vs Pirates Pick

The dismal performance of the Pittsburgh lineup has led to an 11-34 record in their past 45 games. 25 of those losses have come by at least two runs, while they’ve been outscored by 49 runs over their last 14 outings.

New York took its foot off the gas against the lowly Nationals on the weekend, but don’t expect that trend to continue on Monday. The Mets have been one of the best teams at covering the runline this season, and we should expect that trend to continue in spite of their recent lacklustre offense.

With Atlanta breathing down its neck, I’m banking on New York re-establishing itself as one of the top NL championship contenders this week, and it starts with a convincing win against the Pirates.

Pick: New York Mets -1.5 (-120)
