The Yanks opened up as -114 favorite in the Mets vs Yankees odds, in a game that features a total of 10. The Mets have won three straight, and six of their past eight, and will have another favorable matchup against a struggling J.A. Happ.
Happ-Less in 2020
Happ has surrendered nine runs in 12.2 innings this season, and has already been taken deep four times. His fastball velocity is the lowest it’s been since 2012, and he’s yet to record a quality start this season.
37 year old J.A. Happ and his 6 ERA was is acting like he’s a Cy Young Contender right now. J.A., you’ve been bad for 2 years! That’s why they’re skipping you! https://t.co/naCTCu0Ppk

His spot in the rotation has been skipped multiple times already, even though the rest of the Yankee starters, not named Gerrit Cole, have been a huge disappointment. The scary thing for Yankees fans is that the numbers suggest Happ is lucky his stats are only as bad as they are. He has a 7.11 BB/9 rate and opposing hitters are hitting only .189 on balls in play. For context, Happ’s career low BABIP is .262, which suggests negative regression is right around the corner.
Mets Career Stats vs Happ
Player | AB | H | HR | RBI | K | AVG. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Brandon Nimmo | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .000 |
Pete Alonso | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .000 |
Robinson Cano | 31 | 9 | 1 | 6 | 5 | .290 |
Dominic Smith | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .000 |

Jeff McNeil | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | .000 |
Wilson Ramos | 6 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 0 | .333 |
The Mets meanwhile, continued their power surge on Friday belting four more home runs. They’ve now gone deep 13 times in their last six victories, which spells trouble for Happ and his 2.84 HR/9 rate.
Yanks Look to Rough Up the Reliever
The Mets will counter with Robert Gsellman, which basically means it will be a bullpen game. Gsellman, has been primarily a reliever over the past three seasons, and hasn’t lasted more than 2 innings in either of his two starts this season. The right-hander has struggled in 2020, posting a 7.71 ERA and 2.14 WHIP, while allowing opposing batters to hit .364 and slug .591 against him.
all games should be seven innings so the mets bullpen has less of a chance of blowing it

The Mets bullpen has been shaky so far this season, but were incredible against the Yankees in Friday’s doubleheader. They held the Bronx Bombers scoreless in 7 innings over the two games, surrendering just three hits.

Yankees Are a Mess
The Yankees offense is ice cold, which is understandable considering they’re missing DJ LeMahieu, Gleybar Torres, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. They’ve averaged just 2.7 runs per game during their losing streak and while LeMahieu is scheduled to return on Sunday, Saturday’s offensive outlook appears bleak.
How wild was that? Full disclosure..For a split second I didn’t even realize the Mets won the game! Watching them pour out of the dugout jolted me back to reality. Road uniforms, Yankee Stadium, seventh inning, watching on TV. What a goofy season, huh?

Also working against the Yanks is the fact that Happ is a mess, and the Mets are finally starting to hit. It’s hard to imagine, but nobody should be surprised when the losing streak is extended to eight.
