The Philadelphia Phillies (62-60, 26-35 away) finally ended their four-game losing skid on Friday night in the series opener against the San Diego Padres (67-57, 40-25), who continue to slide themselves. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Saturday, with first-pitch at 8:40pm ET at Petco Park.

Philly hands the ball to Aaron Nola, while the Padres counter with Joe Musgrove.

Probable Pitchers

Nola makes his 24th start of the season on Saturday as he looks to bounce back from a poor outing last time out. The righty was touched up by the Cincinnati Reds, allowing four earned runs in just 4.1 innings of work. On the year, Nola is 7-7 with a 4.48 ERA but he has struck out 163 batters in 134.2 innings.

His command has also been decent, allowing just 31 free passes. Nola has simply just been hit around, giving up 20 home runs. Opposing lineups have a 36.6 hard-hit percentage off him as well. This will actually be Nola’s first start against the Padres in 2021, but he’s very familiar with them. In his career, the 28-year-old has a 2-3 record and 3.66 ERA in six appearances vs San Diego. Only a handful of batters in their current lineup have faced Nola, though.

Nola vs Musgrove

7-7 Record 8-8
4.48 ERA 3.11

Musgrove has been the Padres’ most consistent starter this season, posting an 8-8 record and 3.11 ERA. He even threw a no-hitter earlier in the year in Texas. However, in his last outing, he was on the wrong side of history as Diamondbacks rookie Tyler Gilbert threw a no-no against San Diego in a 7-0 loss. In the process, Musgrove was lit up by Arizona, surrendering six runs across five innings. That was actually his worst start of 2021 though and you better believe he’ll be poised to bounce back at home on Saturday.

The hard-throwing right-hander has been a strike-out machine, racking up 151 K’s in 133.1 innings. He also pitched extremely well at Petco, boasting a 2.43 ERA. Even better, Musgrove has a 1.20 ERA against the Phillies in three appearances, but he hasn’t faced them yet this season.

The bats were rather quiet for the Phillies again on Friday, registering just five hits. But, their four runs proved to be enough, with Bryce Harper clubbing a two-run homer in the third inning off Blake Snell. It was a much-needed victory for Philadelphia, who have gone just 3-7 in their last 10 games.

They still sit four games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East as well. The most promising part of the win was Matt Moore, who put together his second straight quality start after struggling all season long. The lefty lasted just 4.1 innings, but he only allowed two earned runs.

San Diego’s chances at catching the San Francisco Giants in the National League West are slim as they sit a whole 12 games behind. They do hold a Wild Card spot right now but if the Padres don’t start winning some ballgames, Jayce Tingler’s squad could find themselves out of the playoff picture altogether.

Injuries have been a huge problem for this team in 2021, with just three of their starting pitchers actually staying healthy in Blake Snell, Ryan Weathers, and Yu Darvish. That’s why San Diego went out and signed Jake Arrieta, but he got lit up in his first start and also left early with an injury. The team is now on a four-game losing streak and is 2-8 in their last 10 games. Hopefully, Musgrove can give them a quality outing and the offense can show up on Saturday after collecting just four hits in the series opener.

Phillies vs Padres Prediction

Musgrove hasn’t always received the most run support this season, but he usually puts his best foot forward. The Padres typically play well at home, which is why they’re a good bet here on the Moneyline.

Pick: San Diego Padres (-180)
