NL Central rivals meet again on Saturday as the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the MLB-worst Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ballpark. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:35 pm ET.

The Pirates will start Mitch Keller here, while the Reds counter with Nick Lodolo. The Pirates are slim -115 road favorites. Ohio online sports bettors are likely shocked at the lofty total, considering the Reds’ struggling offense.

Pirates vs Reds Probable Pitchers

Keller is off to a poor start in 2022, posting a 5.32 ERA, and going 0-4 in five starts. He’s allowed 14 earned runs in 23.2 innings of work while also giving up three home runs. However, the 26-year-old is coming off a quality outing against the Padres, tossing six frames of one-run baseball. He struck out five and didn’t walk a single hitter.

His record doesn’t actually reflect how effective he’s been at times. Keller is simply getting no run support. The Reds are a lineup Keller is familiar with. They’re hitting .207 off him lifetime, but it’s just a small sample size of 27 at-bats.

Keller vs Lodolo

Mitch Keller
VS
Nick Lodolo
0-4 Record 1-2
5.32 ERA 5.22
1.44 WHIP 1.57
.278 OBA .290

Lodolo, a 24-year-old rookie, has taken the mound three times in 2022, compiling a 1-2 record and 5.52 ERA. He’s missed his last two outings due to back soreness, but the former TCU standout is on track to start on Saturday.

When Lodolo last pitched on April 24th, he held a solid Cardinals lineup to only one run across 5. 2 frames while also striking out seven batters. He has never faced the Pirates.

Pirates Betting Outlook

There weren’t many expectations for Pittsburgh coming into this season and they’ve once again struggled. The Pirates are 10-14 currently and 3-7 in their last 10 games. Since Game 1 of this series was postponed on Friday, Pittsburgh is coming off a 7-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The bats came to play, banging out 11 hits including a 3-for-4 day from Ben Gamel.

The offense is middle of the pack. It’s actually the pitching staff that is hurting the Pirates, sitting 28th in ERA and runs allowed. Hopefully, Keller can build off his last outing and give his squad some decent innings on Saturday.

Reds Betting Outlook

There is really not much good to say about Cincinnati this season. They’ve lost an atrocious nine games in a row and have the worst record in the Majors at 3-22. The Red are dead last in countless different categories, including OBP, OPS, ERA, runs allowed, and others.

To put their struggles into perspective, Jonathan India is the only regular in their lineup who is hitting over .250. Veteran Joey Votto is even batting .122. Their MLB Win Total was set at 75 but at this rate, the Reds are going to be a lot lower. There should be a bit of optimism for Saturday though because of how well Lodolo threw the ball in his previous outing.

Pirates vs Reds Prediction

I really like how Keller threw the ball earlier this week and I think he’ll have no problem blazing his way through this struggling Reds offense. Take Pittsburgh here.

The Pick: Pirates -115
