  • The Houston Astros will face the Texas Rangers in the 2023 American League Championship Series
  • The Astros enter the ALCS as slight favorite over a Texas team that still hasn’t lost in the 2023 MLB playoffs

For the first in the history of the Junior Circuit, the American League Championship Series will be an all-Texas affair. Thanks to a 3-2 Game 4 victory over the Minnesota Twins, the Houston Astros booked their ticket to the ALCS for the seventh straight season.

Already awaiting their arrival are the upstart Texas Rangers, who swept their best-of-three Wild Card with the Tampa Bay Rays before dusting aside the top-seeded Baltimore Orioles in the minimum three games in the ALDS.

Despite the Rangers’ rampant run through the AL playoffs so far, it’s the experienced Astros who are favored in the opening Rangers vs Astros series price.

Rangers vs Astros Series Odds (2023 ALCS)

Team Odds Series Spread Total Games O/U
Texas Rangers +105 +1.5 (-175) O 5.5 (-180)
Houston Astros -135 -1.5 (+145) U 5.5 (+155)

The opening odds at DraftKings favor the Astros at -135 with Texas coming back as a slight +105 underdog. Curiously, FanDuel’s ALCS odds opened at Houston -175 with Texas at +115. Bettors can expect the vig on both sets of odds to come down once oddsmakers have had a chance to scrutinize further.

Houston has been the favorite in the AL Pennant odds since claiming the AL West title – and with it a first-round bye in the MLB playoff bracket – on the final day of the regular season. With both NLDS still on the go, the Astros are also the favorite in the World Series odds at this point, listed at +240 at FanDuel with the Rangers at +320.

Texas Rangers vs Houston Astros Recent H2H History

The recent history between Houston and Texas weighs heavily in favor of the Astros. Houston went 9-4 against their division rivals during the 2023 regular season, the third consecutive season in which the Astros won the head to head by a wide margin. Houston had a +19 run differential over the 13 games, with six of their nine wins coming by at least two runs.

While playing a more division-heavy schedule in 2021 and 2022, Houston went 14-5 against Texas both years.

The Rangers managed a 5-5 split in the abbreviated 2020 campaign, but haven’t actually won the head-to-head with the Astros since 2016, the last season the Astros missed the playoffs.

The Rangers and Astros have never previously met in the postseason, thanks in part to Houston playing in the National League from their inception in 1962 until 2013. Dating back to their days as the Washington Senators (1961-1971), the Ranger franchise is still in search of its first World Series title. They won back-to-back AL Pennants in 2010 and 2011 but lost to the San Francisco Giants and St Louis Cardinals, respectively, in the World Series.
