Playing host to the Boston Red Sox (2-4) at Comerica Park, not much is anticipated from the Detroit Tigers (2-4) this season. It’s Detroit’s home opener, though and for starters, the Tigers launch the home season as if they were the 1927 Yankees.
Detroit is 12-2 straight in home openers since 2009. That span includes a pair of victories over the Red Sox. Detroit is 5-1 SU in home openers when facing the BoSox.
In fact, the only time Boston won Detroit’s home opener, the Tigers went on to win the World Series. That was in 1968, then the Red Sox were 7-3 winners on opening day at Tiger Stadium.
Red Sox vs Tigers Odds
Team | Run Line | Total | Moneyline |
---|---|---|---|
Boston Red Sox | -1.5 (+105) | O 8 (-110) | -155 |
Detroit Tigers | +1.5 (-125) | U 8 (-110) | +135 |
Nonetheless, oddsmakers are ignoring these many Detroit success stories and writing odds that favor Boston. It’s the Red Sox who are set as -155 road favorites. The Red Sox are 7-3 SU in their last 10 away games against the Tigers.
First pitch for this game on Thursday, April 6, is set for 1:10pm ET at Comerica Park. The game will be broadcast on the MLB Network.

On the total of eight runs, there’s less certainty. The under is getting 61% of handle. Bets are falling 51-49% in favor of the over. The total has gone over in five of Boston’s last seven games. However, the under is 7-1-1 in the last nine games between the Red Sox and Tigers
Neither of these teams are what would be classified as contenders. At +7000 in the World Series odds, Boston is 19th in this betting market. The Tigers are three spots further down the ladder with a betting line of +10000 to win the Fall Classic.
Sale, Turnbull Struggle in Return to Mound
Both starting pitchers in this game – Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale and Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull – are looking to rebound back to form following Tommy John surgery. Turnbull was limited to nine starts in 2021 and missed all of last season.

Southpaw Sale underwent his surgery in 2020, but a myriad of other ailments have prevented his full-time return to the bump. Last season, he endured a right rib fracture, broken left pinkie finger and fractured right wrist.
Neither pitcher made it beyond the third inning in their first start of the 2023 season.

Red Sox vs Tigers Pick & Prediction
Boston has lost five straight visits to Detroit for the Tigers home opener. They were 6-5 losers at Comerica Park on April 7, 2017 and fell 3-2 there on April 5, 2012.
Each of Detroit’s last four home-opening victories were one-run decisions. The only teams to beat Detroit in home openers over the past 14 seasons are the Kansas City Royals (14-6 in 2020) and Pittsburgh Pirates (13-10 in 2018).
Boston comes to Detroit after being swept at home in a three-game series by Pittsburgh. The Tigers took two of three on the road from the World Series champion Houston Astros.
Pick: Detroit Tigers ML (+135)
