On the off chance you’re not up to speed on the NL Central race, the Reds (47-39, 24-18 away) would like your attention. Cincinnati is playing some of the best baseball of anyone in the league these days, entering play on Wednesday with 18 wins in their past 22 games, and sitting atop its division.

Despite the impressive form, online sportsbooks are siding against the Reds on Thursday afternoon, pegging the Nationals (34-51, 13-29 home) as home chalk in the MLB odds.

Cincinnati vs Washington Probable Pitchers

It took a while, but Cincy’s recent play is starting to move the needle in the World Series odds. Two weeks ago, they were priced at 150-1, but after moving to +10000 last week, their odds have been shortened again to +8000.

They’ll send rookie Brandon Williamson to the mound on Thursday, who’s seeing more action in light of the Reds starting pitching injuries. Cincy is down two starters from their rotation, which has opened the door for Williamson to be a full-time contributor.

The 25-year-old has had an inconsistent start to his MLB career, but is fresh off one of his best outings of the season. Williamson allowed three hits and two runs over 5 innings to the Padres, striking out five.

That marked the first time in five starts he’s kept the opposition below three runs, and it’s encouraging that it came against a lineup that on paper, should be among the NL’s best.

Williamson vs Gore Stats

Brandon Williamson
VS
MacKenzie Gore
1-2 Record 4-7
5.56 ERA 4.48
1.40 WHIP 1.47
.254 OBA .269
1.9 SO/W Ratio 2.7

Washington meanwhile, will counter with MacKenzie Gore. The left-hander has posted big strikeout numbers this season, but that hasn’t translated to a ton of success.

Gore owns a K/9 rate of 11, but has struggled with his control. He’s allowing a walk nearly every two innings, while he’s already surrendered seven more home runs this season compared to 2022, in a similar amount of innings.

Gore was roughed up by the Phillies in his last outing, getting the hook after 2.2 innings. He yielded six hits and seven runs, marking the third time in five starts he’s allowed at least five runners to cross the plate.

Reds vs Nationals Predictions

The Nats sophomore will have his hands full with the Cincinnati regulars in the MLB starting lineups, as they’ve been one of the most potent units in MLB lately. They’re slashing .270/.363/.489 over the last two weeks, belting 24 home runs in 12 games.

The Reds are averaging six runs per contest during that stretch, and dating back even further they’ve been just as hot. Cincinnati ranks third in MLB in slugging over the last four weeks, while ranking second in wOBA and stealing 10 more bases than anyone else.

NL ROY odds contender Elly De La Cruz has been a major catalyst accounting for nine steals and 20 runs, while Jonathan India and Spencer Steer have supplied the power with seven and six home runs a piece.

No player has been on base more than Will Benson though, who’s slashing .373/.484/.603 over his last 18 games.

Reds vs Nationals 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
July 4 Reds Nationals CIN, 8-4
July 3 Reds Nationals CIN, 3-2

As for Washington, the results haven’t been as favorable. They’re averaging less than four runs per outing over the last two weeks, slashing a mediocre .253/.302/.419 over that stretch. The Nats have dropped 11 of their past 18, but they still feature worthy targets in the player props market.

Both Lane Thomas and Jeimer Candelario are slugging north of .580 over the last four weeks, with five home runs each. Thomas has hit safely in 45 of 50 games, with 17 multi-hit efforts over that span. The 27-year-old has been especially tough on lefties like Williamson in 2022, batting .385, with a 1.116 OPS.

Picks:

  • Cincinnati Reds Moneyline (-105)
  • Spencer Steer Over 1.5 Total Bases (+115)
  • Lane Thomas Over 1.5 Total Bases (-120)
