The Colorado Rockies and Detroit Tigers meet for an evening matchup on Saturday, April 23rd at Comerica Park in the second game of a doubleheader after Friday’s contest was postponed due to rain. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm ET.
Lefty Austin Gomber takes the ball for his third start of the year for the Rockies as he looks to improve on his struggles. The Tigers counter with Beau Brieske, who is making his MLB debut.

The Rockies are a -120 favorite here, which is no surprise since a rookie is taking the hill for Detroit.

Probable Pitchers
Gomber gets the call on Saturday after posting a 7.00 ERA through two appearances so far. Last time out, the Cubs lit him up for four earned runs across 4.1 innings.
Prior to that, Gomber also allowed three runs across 4.2 frames. He’s really getting hit around right now but if there was a time to break out, it would be against a Tigers lineup that is in a cold streak at the plate. In 16 at-bats though, Detroit is hitting .333 off him.
Gomber vs Brieske
0-1 | Record | 0-1 |
7.00 | ERA | 4.50 |
2.00 | WHIP | 1.20 |
.324 | OBA | .243 |
*Brieske’s stats are from Triple-A.
Brieske was only drafted in 2019 by the Tigers in the 27th round. Needless to say, he wasn’t a top prospect coming out of college but the righty was named Detroit’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2021 after dominating with a 9-4 record and 3.12 ERA in 21 starts.

He’s on a similar trajectory this season as he made two starts in Triple-A and looked solid. With Casey Mize and Matt Manning suffering injuries recently, the Tigers are giving the 24-year-old a chance in the show.
He will have his work cut out for him though, with the Rockies hitting .284 as a team so far.
Rockies Betting Outlook
Colorado is off to a flying start in the NL West, sitting in first place with an 8-4 record. Their offense is absolutely on fire, sitting in the top-three in the MLB in average, hits, runs, slugging, and OBP, among others. Kris Bryant is certainly enjoying life in the Mile High City, hitting .349 in 11 games. He also sits at +4000 in NL MVP odds.

Meanwhile, first baseman C.J. Cron has smacked six homers already. Facing a rookie on Sunday, the Rockies will be looking to give him a beating and keep the hot bats going. Colorado’s MLB wins total was set at just 69.5 prior to the season, but they’re certainly on track to surpass that.
Tigers Betting Outlook
Detroit’s arms are actually doing very well early on, compiling a 3.28 ERA as a group. But, the offense is not clicking. They’ve struggled to score runs and muster up hits while only batting .210.
The likes of Miguel Cabrera, who is on the brink of his 3000th hit, Austin Meadows, and Javier Baez are actually producing, but other than them, there’s been few positives.
#Tigers shortstop Javier Baez expected to return this weekend
– Beau Brieske to make MLB debut Saturday.
– Victor Reyes to 10-day injured list.
– Derek Hill called up from Triple-A Toledo.
– Andrew Chafin update. https://t.co/Uo4EyJFbC2— Evan Petzold (@EvanPetzold) April 22, 2022
Baez returns to the lineup on Saturday as well after missing time with an injury. Hopefully, he can pick up where he left off. Jeimer Candelario is also 3-for-4 lifetime off Gomber, which is a reason for optimism amid his slow start.
Rockies vs Tigers Prediction
It’s always tough to ride with a rookie and the Rockies are truly swinging the bats at a ridiculous level. I think Colorado will pull this one out and get to Brieske early. The moneyline is worth a bet.
