Richards Turns It Around

After a rocky start to the season, Richards has become a reliable starter for the Red Sox. Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Richards is 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA in his last seven starts after going 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in his first four.

Richards has lost his last two outings. However, he pitched well in a losing effort in his last start Tuesday against the Astros at Houston when he gave up two runs and four hits in six innings with five strikeouts and four walks.

Richards has worked at least six innings in six of his 11 starts this season. He has recorded four quality starts.

Yankee Stadium has been Richards’ house of horrors, though, as he is 0-4 with a 7.43 in five career starts in the Bronx. He has a 0-5 lifetime record against the Yankees with an 8.42 ERA in seven games, including six starts.

Yankees Career Stats vs Richards

Clint Frazier 0 0 0 0 0
Gary Sanchez 2 1 0 1 0 .500

Since coming off the COVID-19 list, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres is hitting .345 (19 for 55) in 17 games with six runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs, six walks and one stolen base.

The Yankees have scored five runs or fewer in 13 games in a row.

German Provides Consistency

German has provided consistent innings to the Yankees. He has pitched at least five in each of his last eight starts.

German has also been effective lately, going 2-2 with a 2.40 ERA in his last five starts. His most recent start came

Tuesday against Tampa Bay at home and he went five innings in a no-decision, allowing three runs and three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

On five occasions this season, German has pitched six or more innings. That happens to coincide with his five quality starts in 2021.

In his career against the Red Sox, German is 2-1 with a 5.11 ERA in six games, including five starts. He has struggled at Yankee Stadium this season, going 0-2 with a 4.68 ERA in five starts.

Red Sox Career Stats vs German

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG
Danny Santana 0 0 0 0 0
Alex Verdugo 0 0 0 0 0
Xander Bogaerts 10 4 1 1 2 .400
Rafael Devers 11 2 0 0 4 .182

Kike Hernandez 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Christian Vazquez 2 0 0 0 0 .000
Bobby Dalbec 0 0 0 0 0

Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez sat out Saturday’s game with a jammed left wrist and is questionable for Sunday. He suffered the injury Friday during a slide.

Boston has scored at least five runs in each of the last three games after managing a total of seven in its previous four contests.

Kike Breaks Out

On Saturday night, Kike Hernandez snapped a 0-for-27 skid with double that broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and the Red Sox completed their major league-best 20th come-from-behind victory.

Hernandez got his first RBI since May 20 as he scored Rafael Devers from first. Christian Vazquez drove in Hernandez a batter later with a single and Bobby Dalbec followed with a two-run homer.

Torres hit a two-run homer for the Yankees and added a sacrifice fly.

Red Sox Turning Tables

The Red Sox have won two in a row at Yankee Stadium after entering the series on an 11-game losing streak in the Bronx. Boston has also lost 23 of its previous 27 games in New York.

Yet despite the Red Sox’s reversal of fortunes this weekend, it is hard to ignore Richards’ awful track record at Yankee Stadium. Thus, the play here is to fade him.

The Pick: Yankees (-159)
