- The Washington Nationals won Game 1 of the World Series 5-4
- The Nats beat Gerrit Cole, who had won 19 straight decisions
- Houston opened as a -175 favorite for Game 2
The Washington Nationals edged the Houston Astros 5-4 in Game 1 of the World Series. It was an impressive road win as they beat Gerrit Cole in the process. With a win in their pocket, the 2019 World Series odds have shifted significantly after the Astros opened at -215. Who is the best bet to win the series at this point?
Updated World Series Odds After Game 1
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Washington Nationals | +100 |
Houston Astros | -120 |
Odds taken October 22, 2019.
Astros Stumble in Game 1
Gerrit Cole had been reliable as it gets for the Astros this season as he had won 19 straight starts entering Tuesday night. However, he had a rough outing in Game 1 as the Nats got to him for eight hits and five earned runs in seven innings of work. Cole was mostly fine until the fifth when the Nats picked up three runs off of him.
As for the Astros bats, they had some good cuts and picked up 10 hits but they came up just short. It really felt like the game changed early in the first inning. The Astros had two on with no outs and while they eventually scored two runs off of Max Scherzer, it felt a bigger inning would have changed the complexion of the game.

The Nats used a number of key arms already as Game 3 starter Patrick Corbin worked an inning while the late-inning duo of Daniel Hudson and Sean Doolittle both worked 1.1 innings apiece.
World Series Odds Shift Significantly
The World Series odds have already been updated as both the Nationals and Astros are at -110. Of course, with the Astros losing, they’ve now lost home-field advantage. It also feels like a big momentum shift because the Astros lost with their best pitcher on the mound. Momentum is clearly with the Nationals right now.

What’s the Best Bet?
The math here is quite simple. If you liked the Astros before, now is a good opportunity to buy-in. Previously, they were at -215 and while they did lose, you’re getting them at a bit of a discount right now as the adjusted series price has knocked a lot off the price tag.
However, if you liked the Nationals before, not a lot changes here. Hopefully you had them prior to the start of the series and now you just sit on your ticket. You could buy-in now but it feels like Game 2 will be the Astros best shot. Given the odds at about -175 for Houston, the oddsmakers are suggesting this series will get tied up.

It’s just one game but it is concerning that Houston lost here with their best pitcher on the mound. I wouldn’t blame you for sitting this out and not betting anything. However, the Astros threatened in the bottom of the third, fourth, seventh and eighth and didn’t come away with a lot. I’ll expect them to do better in Game 2 and tie this up.
