The Chicago White Sox (5-6) opened a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins (6-4) with a win on Monday, but also were suffering a loss. ChiSox shortstop Tim Anderson sprained his ankle in the game. He’ll be out 2-4 weeks.

It’s been an injury-plagued start to the season for both clubs. Minnesota is missing 10 players through injury, including shortstop Carlos Correa. The big offseason addition for the Twins is day-to-day due to back spasms.

The White Sox are minus seven players, with third baseman Yoan Moncada (back) and DH Eloy Jimenez (strained hamstring) among the ailing.

No Gray Area for Twins Gray

It’s always sunny when Sonny Gray is on the mound for Minnesota so far this season. In two starts covering 12 innings, the veteran right-hander is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA and  1.00 WHIP. He struck out a career-high 13 on April 7 against the World Series champion Houston Astros.

Gray faced the White Sox twice last season and was 0-1 with a 4.37 ERA and 2.087 WHIP. He was 4-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 10 day game starts.

Giolito vs Gray

9.00 ERA 0.75
4.61 xERA 4.25
2.00 WHIP 1.00
9.00 SO/W 2.80

The struggles of 2022 are carrying over into 2023 for White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito. Still looking for his first decision, Giolito hasn’t made it beyond the fifth inning in two starts. He was shelled for 12 hits and seven earned over four innings by the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last start.

Going back to last season, Giolito shows just one win since August 24. However, that win was on Oct. 4 over the Twins. He was 1-1 with 3.00 ERA in four starts against the Twins last season. In 11 daytime starts in 2022 Giolito was 3-3 with a 5.09 ERA.

Benintendi Wears Out Sonny

White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi has beat a steady path to the base paths when facing Gray. He’s 7-for-17 (.412) with a home run and three RBI.

First baseman Gavin Sheets and outfielder Luis Robert, who leads the AL with four homers, have also gone deep off of Gray. Robert is 2-for-6 (.333) with four RBI.

Giolito has proven fairly handy when it comes to handcuffing Twins batters. Second baseman Nick Gordon (3-for-7, .286) is the only Minnesota hitter batting better than .231 lifetime against the White Sox righty.

Outfielder Michael A Taylor is only batting .231 (3-for-13) when facing Giolito. However, two of those three hits are homers. Taylor has also driven in three runs.

White Sox vs Twins Prediction

Based on what’s unfolded thus far in 2023, the Twins and Gray might look like the play here. Giolito, though, saves his best work for Minnesota. In 10 career starts at Target Field, he’s 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA

Pick: Chicago White Sox ML (+130)
