Will Korean Zombie Get Back Into The Win Column?

Korean Zombie is coming off a disappointing loss to Brian Ortega on Fight Island, where he was dominated on the feet and now has to fight back in the ranks to defend his top-five spot. Dan Ige, meanwhile, gets his second main event and second shot at becoming a top-five guy.

Zombie & Ige Recent Fights

Zombie
VS
Ige
Brian Ortega, loss by decision Fight 1 Gavin Tucker, win by KO
Frankie Edgar, win by TKO Fight 2 Calvin Kattar, loss by decision
Renato Moicano, win by TKO Fight 3 Edson Barboza, win by split decision
Yair Rodriguez, loss by KO Fight 4 Mirsad Bektic, win by split decision

After Ige scored a highlight-reel one-punch KO in just 22 seconds last time out he called out Korean Zombie and got his wish. Zombie is a perennial contender and gets his nickname for being able to walk through punches and keep going. In his last fight, he looked a bit slow as Ortega beat him to the punch, but that could be due to the long flight and fighting in the middle of the night in Abu Dhabi.

Although many are viewing this as a big fight for Ige, it’s also crucial for Zombie as if he loses, he won’t be considered a legit contender anymore and will need some stepbacks. It’s also an intriguing matchup as both men are primarily kickboxers with some underrated ground games.

Zombie & Ige Stats

Ige

5’7″ Height 5’7″
72″ Reach 71″
6 UFC finishes 3

Korean Zombie had an incredible run to a title shot against Jose Aldo back in 2013 but lost in the fourth round due to him dislocating his shoulder. In his run to the title shot, he showed off his ground game as he submitted Dustin Poirier and Leonard Garcia as well as KO’ing Mark Hominick in seven seconds. Since then, however, he has been more known as a striker and gets a tough challenge in Dan Ige.

Ige is a very technical striker who beats people with volume. He does get into close fights because he gets hit a lot. However, at this point in their careers, I expect the Hawaiian to be the faster striker and just out-volume Zombie. I doubt either man will get finished as they both are very durable, but I like Ige to get a very close decision win in a back-and-forth kickboxing fight.

Pick: Dan Ige (-110)

Will Oleinik Snap His Skid?

Aleksei Oleinik, who is now 43-years-old and turning 44 on June 25, is set for his 76th professional MMA fight on Saturday. It also could be do-or-die for his UFC career as he’s on a two-fight skid while Sergey Spivak has had mixed results in the UFC.

Oleinik & Spivak Recent Fights

Oleinik
VS
Spivak
Chris Daukaus, loss by TKO Fight 1 Jared Vanderaa, win by TKO
Derrick Lewis, loss by KO Fight 2 Carlos Felipe, win by majority decision
Fabricio Werdum, win by split decision Fight 3 Marcin Tybura, loss by decision
Maurice Greene, win by submission Fight 4 Tai Tuivasa, win by submission

This is a fascinating matchup as the path to beat Oleinik is simple as his striking defense is poor as all you need to do is blitz him early, and you’ll get the TKO win. However, if you go to the ground with the Russian he is a phenomenal grappler and doesn’t need much to get the submission win. Spivak, meanwhile, is a grappler who likes to use his wrestling to take his opponents down, which makes things interesting.

Ultimately, it’s hard to trust Oleinik at this stage of his career as I expect Spivak to get a TKO win either in the first or second round as he will hurt the Russian on the feet and finish him with ground strikes.

Pick: Sergey Spivak (-225)

Other UFC Vegas 29 Picks:

  1. Matt Brown (+140): I just haven’t been impressed with Lima, and Brown is the better striker and will either get a TKO win or a decision win by landing the heavier shots.
  2. Bruno Silva (-155): Silva hasn’t fought since 2018, but he’s a much better fighter than Turman and will get a KO/TKO win.
  3. Marlon Vera (-250): Vera should be able to outland Grant and win a decision in the rematch. However, at this point, the odds are too high for my liking.
  4. Tim Means (-200): Means is a much better striker, and if he doesn’t find the chin early, it’ll be similar to the Mike Perry fight where he clearly wins every round using his volume.
