Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will have their trilogy bout on July 10th, 2021 at UFC 264 in front of a full-capacity crowd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now that the fight is confirmed, the oddsmakers have updated the McGregor vs Poirier odds to a pick’em.

The two first met at UFC 178 in September of 2014 at featherweight, and McGregor earned a first-round TKO. It was a solid performance from the Irishman who went on to become the featherweight and lightweight champion. They then had their rematch at UFC 257 in January of this year, and Poirier made some major adjustments and scored a second-round TKO win.

Immediately after the fight, both McGregor and Poirier confirmed they would be running it back as they are 1-1. Poirier even turned down a vacant lightweight title fight to face the Irishman again. With the fight now official, the sportsbooks have updated the odds for the trilogy fight.

How Did The Fight Get Confirmed?

Although just minutes after the fight ended, both said the trilogy would happen, and UFC president, Dana White confirmed the news, the fight nearly was called off this week.

In the lead-up to UFC 257, McGregor said he would be donating $500k to Poirier’s charity. However, on Twitter this week, Poirier revealed the Irishman never ended up donating the money, which caused an uproar.

Yet, according to McGregor, he claimed Poirier and the charity never told him where the money would be going, which is why he never ended up paying. After that, he said the fight was off and he would be fighting someone else on July 10th despite Poirier already signing his contract.

Yet, on Wednesday morning, White announced the fight was official after McGregor signed his contract. The Irishman also appears to be fired up for the trilogy.

How Might The Odds Change?

When the trilogy fight was rumored to take place, McGregor opened as a -130 favorite with the comeback on Poirier at +115. Now, they have it is a pick’em, which is surprising to me.

I actually thought having McGregor as a -130 favorite made sense for several reasons. Having him as a slight favorite will increase the amount of volume on him as the Irishman is usually above -200, so to get him for nearly half of that, the casual bettors and the Irish would jump on it. Then, they would get two-way action as people would jump at the opportunity to get plus-money on Poirier given how the last fight played out in January.

I do expect the odds to be moving a ton up until the two-step into the Octagon. At even money, you will see strong stances on both sides. Some will believe Poirier is just the better fighter. However, some will back McGregor and believe he will make the necessary adjustments like he did when he fought Nate Diaz after losing to him.

Don’t be surprised if at some point both men become the betting underdog, but come July 10th, I’d expect McGregor to be about a -150 favorite due to his popularity and he tends to get a lot of late bets in on him when the Irish arrive in Las Vegas, as well as casual bettors betting on the day of the fight.
