Tuesday night has more than a couple of fascinating NBA games. The red-hot Celtics matchup with the Sixers in Philadelphia, and we might need to get a couple of screens on the go with the Mavericks and Heat tipping off in Miami 10 minutes later. There’s also the small matter of the Hawks and Cavaliers duelling, a game which Cleveland is slight favorites in.

A pair of fun young teams in the Hornets and Timberwolves go head-to-head at 8:10pm ET. Charlotte is 6.5-point dogs with Minnesota having won six of its last eight.

Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers take on the defending champion Bucks, while the new-look Pelicans face the high-flying Grizz in New Orleans. The night is rounded out with the Clippers and Suns in Phoenix.

Odds as of Feb 15 at FanDuel Sportsbook

Only three games have player props available at the time of writing with NBA MVP odds favorite Joel Embiid owning the highest points line. Embiid also tops the rebounds category, closely followed by Cavs center Jarrett Allen and Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns.

Hawks Can’t Stop Garland

The Atlanta Hawks are fourth-worst in defense this season. They have benefited from some poor opponent shooting of late, but the age old issues remain in Trae Young minutes. While they will attempt to hide Young on Isaac Okoro in Tuesday night’s game, Darius Garland is still going to benefit from Young being on the court, as his presence slumps Atlanta’s defense to the worst in the league.

Garland has scored 27 in each of his last two appearances. He’s also recorded 29 or more points and assists in eight of his last 10 games, albeit a run that dates back a month because he’s missed some time recently. Luka Doncic is the only qualifier with a higher assist rate than Garland across the last 15.

The Hawks have given up 32 and 15 to Dejounte Murray and 26 and 11 to Fred VanVleet over their last five games. This is a team which desperately struggles to contain elite perimeter talents, which Garland has unquestionably proven himself to be.

Despite Caris LeVert’s arrival, Garland remains among the league leaders in usage rate. Against a woeful Hawks defense, he should post some big numbers on Tuesday.

  • Pick: Darius Garland over 28.5 points and assists (-125)

Towns Becomes Latest Big to Trouble Charlotte

Karl-Anthony Towns has been used far more as a playmaker this season. His 19.6% assist rate is one of the higher marks among frontcourt players, and with no true floor general on the Timberwolves, he carries a significant workload with only D’Angelo Russell (6.9) and Patrick Beverley (4.9) averaging more than his four assists per game.

In fact, Towns is averaging 5.6 assists per game over his last 10. Among centers per NBA.com, only Nikola Jokic, Julius Randle and Domantas Sabonis are at a higher number.

He’s fifth in potential assists at center, and has moved up to fourth across the last 10. There’s been a considerable uptick of late, admittedly aided by Russell missing time. Towns’ average across the previous 10 is 10.1 potential assists per contest compared to his season average of 7.7.

The All-Star big man has the added benefit of facing a weak Charlotte defense. Like Garland and Atlanta, the Hornets have been unable to slow anyone down this season and that’s particularly relevant for big men. This is a weakness they failed to address at the trade deadline (curiously trading for Montrezl Harrell instead). Opposing centers have enjoyed some strong offensive games of late with Nikola Vucevic and Pascal Siakam both dropping eight assists and Steven Adams exceeding his season average with four.

Towns’ assist numbers have been up and down, and he’s only recorded five or more in five of the previous 10. Still, this is too good to turn down at plus odds.

  • Pick: Karl-Anthony Towns over 4.5 assists (+134)
