The NBA Play-In Tournament continues tonight, with game 1 of the doubleheader pitting the Magic versus the 76ers in the East’s 7th vs 8th place contest. Online sportsbooks are siding with Philly by a slim margin in the NBA odds, but the assignment will be significantly tougher without the presence of star center Joel Embiid.

Embiid’s absence opens up opportunity in the player props market, and I’m looking to target a pair of names that should benefit from him not being on the court.

My favorite NBA props bet tonight is over 2.5 threes for Tyrese Maxey. Without Embiid to share the scoring burden, his usage sky rockets, and Maxey has a solid track record of long range success against Orlando. I’m also betting over 4.5 rebounds for Magic big man Franz Wagner, who should be a big benefactor on the glass with Embiid missing in action.

Magic vs 76ers Player-Prop Pick #1: Tyrese Maxey Threes

• Tyrese Maxey Over 2.5 Threes (-131 at DraftKings)

Maxey’s usage rate climbs from 27.9 to over 31 without Embiid. That makes sense, because the Sixers tend to push the pace when their big man sits, and no player is as effective handling the rock as Maxey. His elite speed forces defenders to give him space opening up the opportunity to get clean looks off. He’s put up 25 three-point attempts in his last three outings alone, and 8 long range attempts versus Orlando this season.

Tyrese Maxey vs Magic This Season

He’s cleared 2.5 threes in six of his last nine contests versus the Magic and is a big threat to do so again tonight. Orlando did yield the second fewest made threes in the league this season, but with a postseason berth on the line, I trust Maxey to post a ceiling type performance and lock in Philly’s position on the NBA Championship odds board.

Magic vs 76ers Player-Prop Pick #2: Franz Wagner Rebounds

• Franz Wagner Over 4.5 Rebounds (-120 at FanDuel)

Embiid’s absence also puts Philly at a severe disadvantage on the glass. They need to find a way to make up for his rebounding prowess, and I’m not convinced Adem Bona or Andre Drummond can keep Wagner and Co. off the boards.

A look at Wagner’s game log over the last month isn’t very inspiring, but you have to remember he’s been working his way back from injury and has been on a minutes restriction. I expect that will be shed tonight, opening the door for him to play 30+ minutes.

In the last 19 games he’s played at least 27 minutes he’s cleared this line 18 times, and with the stakes sky-high tonight he should see more than enough floor time to cash this ticket.
