Things don’t look good at all for the Philadelphia 76ers (59-30, 31-13 home) as they get set for Game 4 against the Boston Celtics (63-28, 28-17) from the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, May 7th.

If not for a choke job in the final three minutes of Game 1, the Celtics would be up 3-0 and looking to clinch a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals in the NBA playoff bracket on Sunday. Thanks to James Harden’s out-of-this-world performance and a cold stretch by Boston to finish that game, Philly has a chance to square things up.

Celtics Defense in Clamp Down Mode

After The Beard destroyed them for 45 points to lead the Sixers to a shocking Game 1 win without Joel Embiid, the Celtics have gone in shutdown mode. Led by Jaylen Brown, Boston has allowed just 189 points total in the last two contests and kept Philly to under 40% shooting from the field in both games.

In their last six games against the Celts, playoffs and regular season combined, the 76ers have broken the 110-point mark just once. This for a team that averaged over 115 points per game during the regular season.

Harden has struggled tremendously since his Game 1 outburst, with Brown and others not allowing him or his backcourt teammates to get into any rhythm whatsoever. After combining for 71 points in their series-opening victory, The Beard and Tyrese Maxey have totaled just 54 points combined in the last two games.

Are 76ers Possibly Better Off Without their MVP?

Putting Game 1 aside, there is no chance Philly would be better off without their MVP center in the NBA odds, although some are suggesting that with what’s occurred so far in this series.

76ers’ Last 4 Games Without Embiid

One very disturbing stat out there is the big man’s lack of postseason success against this Boston side. The Process is now just 1-10 against the Celtics in his playoff career. After starting slow out of the game in his first game back from a knee injury, Embiid went off for 30 points in Game 3, but got little help.

For some reason, a few of the Sixers players are just way more productive without their MVP being the focal point on offense. In the regular season, Maxey averaged 28.9 points per game without Embiid in the lineup, a full nine points above his season average.

During the regular season and playoffs combined, Philadelphia has put up a 46-25 record with the Cameroonian center on the court for a .648 winning percentage, versus a 13-5 mark and .722 winning percentage without him.

Celtics vs 76ers Prediction and Prop Picks

Horrific shooting has plagued Harden in the past two games. He’s just 5-28 from the floor and 2-13 from long distance since his Game 1 explosion.

Playoff choke jobs have haunted the Bearded one throughout his career, but he’s gotten to the line 19 times in his last two outings and has only gone three consecutive games with less than five field goals one time all year.

While Embiid was able to put up a 30-piece on offense in the previous game, his knee injury is limiting his mobility and coverage on the other end of the floor. Guarding Al Horford, who shot 44.6% from beyond the arc and can stretch him out, is proving difficult and is allowing the Boston big man a lot of easy open looks.

Currently, the Celtics are the favorites in the NBA Championship odds and those will shorten with another victory in Game 4 against Philly.

While we like Boston to continue their winning ways, we do think Philly will respond somewhat and wake up on offense. They can’t beat the Celts scoring only 100 points. Our prediction is to take the over in what should be a close contest with the Celtics likely prevailing.
