Warriors a Hot Mess Right Now

It’s been an ugly start to the season for the Warriors as they’ve dropped three of their first four games. Last year’s team didn’t lose three times until their 14th game.

What’s worse is how the losses have come as they fell by 19 to the Los Angeles Clippers, 28 to the Oklahoma City Thunder and now 11 to the Phoenix Suns – which was closer than it appeared as the Warriors were at one point down 43-14.

The loss to the Suns was particularly ugly not only in score but also the loss of superstar guard Steph Curry to a broken hand, which will keep him out for the foreseeable future.

Considering they were already without Klay Thompson, this is likely an insurmountable loss.

Warriors Roster is a Shell of What it Was

Although the Warriors have been to the NBA Finals in five straight seasons, it’s time to look in the mirror and see the reality: this team has lost a lot.

Kevin Durant, Curry and Thompson were All-NBA caliber players. Andre Iguodala is gone, DeMarcus Cousins is gone, Quinn Cook is gone, even Alfonzo McKinnie is gone due to their hard-capped salary constraints.

Sure, D’Angelo Russell was added and Draymond Green is still there, but you can’t remove five of the top six scorers off a team and expect the performance to be the same. Those five players accounted for 98 points per game.

Beyond that, even if Curry and Thompson were healthy, we’ve seen this Warriors roster experience huge turnover. A lot of experienced players are gone and a lot of young players have taken over.

However, as we saw in the team’s first four games, this team was a complete mess as nobody knew their roles, nobody was playing defense and nobody gelled together. This is simply a bad basketball team – with or without Curry.

What’s the Best Bet?

At this point, I wouldn’t bet the Warriors’ Western Conference odds or their NBA Championship odds with free money. This team is that bad. And now that they lost Curry, they’re going to go into full-on tank mode.

What this allows them to do is to develop young players like Jordan Poole, Eric Paschall and Marquese Chriss, get someone like D’Angelo Russell comfortable in their system and give Thompson the season to get healthy. They’ll add a lottery pick at the 2020 NBA Draft and play for next season.

For now, you can forget about this team competing this season.
