  • The Atlanta Hawks are 2-point underdogs vs the New York Knicks Wednesday night
  • New York snapped a 5-game home losing streak last time out
  • Read below for the Hawks vs Knicks preview, with odds and predictions

The New York Knicks (11-13, 5-7 home) snapped an ugly 5-game home losing skid when they dispatched the Cleveland Cavaliers and Donovan Mitchell, their almost star that got away.

Next, their attention should still be piqued, as they host current Knicks nemesis Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks (13-11, 5-6 away).

The Hawks have been making headlines more for off court stuff than on lately, with a reported rift between Young and head coach Nate MacMillan, which both parties are trying to throw deep into the rearview.

It gets underway Wednesday (Dec 7) at 7:30pm ET from Madison Square Garden, in a game that can be seen live on ESPN.

The NBA odds have the hometown Knicks as 2-point favorites, despite just breaking a 5-game home losing streak and sitting 5-7 on the year at MSG. The total in this one is set at 232 points.

Atlanta Betting Outlook

A Trae Young DNP Friday vs the Nuggets  is the subject of major scrutiny.

The issue was Young’s injured shoulder, which he wanted to get treatment on while missing shootaround. MacMillan reportedly preferred he get it during walkthrough, and offered an ultimatum if he chose to miss shootaround: come off the bench or sit out.

MacMillan denies he made such a gesture, but a coach and star-player rift isn’t exactly helpful for a team sitting in fourth in the East.

Young’s first game back was a 121-114 loss at home to the OKC Thunder. He posted 23 points and 10 dimes. Dejounte Murray was the only other Hawk to break 20, chipping in 24 points, six boards, thee times, two steals and two blocks.

A dose of the Knicks should help Young forget about all the off court stuff. The all-star has feasted on New York, averaging 27.9 points and 9.2 assists in 14 regular season games.

Offensively, the Hawks fare better on the road vs home. They average more points (115.5 to 112.8) and hit at a higher clip from distance (36.1% to 30.1%) and from the field (48.1% to 45.6%).

New York Betting Outlook

The Knicks finally got back on track at the Garden with a 92-81 win over the Cavaliers. It’s the first time New York held an opponent under 100 points all season.

Jalen Brunson led the way with 23 points and four assists, while Julius Randle chipped in with 18 points, nine boards and four dimes.

New York’s success came from breaking close to even in three-pointers, as they held the Cavs to 8-for-35 shooting rom deep, a 22.9% clip. The Knicks were a dismal 5-for-29 themselves (17.2%), but that’s par for the course.

The Knicks are the worst three-point shooting team in the league, hitting at a lowly 31.3% rate.

They’ll try to make their mark inside the arc. They’re fifth in offensive rebounding with 12.7 per game. That helps them put up 16.9 2nd-chance points per game, which ranks fourth.

New York also attacks the tin with frequency, as they’re the third-best scoring team in the paint, trailing only the Lakers and Thunder at 56.8 paint points per game. Atlanta is susceptible, as they allow the 5th-most pain points in the NBA.

Hawks vs Knicks Prediction

This is the second of four meetings between these teams, with Atlanta crushing New York at MSG 112-99. Murray cooked for 36 points, nine dimes and five steals. Young shot just 7-for-22, finishing with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

The Knicks have been a tough bet after a W, posting just a 1-7-1 mark against the spread in their last nine after a win. The Hawks haven’t been a sure bet either against the lesser teams: Atlanta is 2-5 ATS in their last seven vs teams with a losing record.

I like Atlanta to cover, but that’s a high total oddsmakers are giving us. In the last 10 head-to-head matchups, they have not crossed this figue, while the under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Gotham.

Let’s roll with a mini-parlay here.

Pick:

  • Hawks +2 & UNDER 232 points (+264); 1 unit to win 2.64 units
  • NBA Betting Record: 14-11 ATS, 1-0 ML, 2-3 o/u; 0-1 parlays; +1.17 units
